Last night the Student Government Association approved Saint
Louis University’s new fight song, written by sophomore Christina
Hardaway.
The song was initially selected from 20 e-mail entries, nine of
which were performed by contestants at Wackadoo’s Grub and Brew on
Feb. 26. Members of SGA, the Blue Crew, the Billiken Band and the
Alumni Relations staff judged the nine finalists on “their
creativity, the amount of school spirit demonstrated in the song,
the performance itself and the aggressive nature of the song,”
according to last night’s legislation, which was authored by
Senators Andrew Chappelle and Cari Johns.
The song, which is set to “When the Saints Go Marching In,” will
replace “Bills’ Battle Call,” the defunct University fight song,
which was written in 1947 by Neil P. McManus, S.J. The lyrics of
the new song are published below.
“SLU Fight Song”
We came to win. We came to win!
The Billikens, The Billikens!
We won’t give up until the end.
We have pride and the Spirit from afar.
We are your Midwest superstars.
Let’s sing it crowd.
And say it loud,
We are S-L-U and we are proud!
Wear white and blue
Our team and the Blue Crew.
Keep hope alive ’cause dreams come true.
Integrity, Yes, we are fair!
And loyalty, So don’t be scared!
We took an oath and do declare.
All hail to SLU, our fathers who are true.
Keep faith in thee Saint Louis U.
Wait–stop–shout it out!
S-A-I-N-T L-O-U-I-S
(louder)
S-A-I-N-T L-O-U-I-S
(say)
S-L-U (who) S-L-U (who)
We have skills and aptitude (who)
Don’t be fooled (who)
By the blue (who)
We have come to conquer you!
