Pro-choice voices on campus need to be heard

We at B*llikens for Choice would like to give credit to Students for Life for expanding the scope of Respect Life Week to include issues of euthanasia and the death penalty.

However, there is still no space on campus for people to openly debate these issues. Students who have differing views on abortion are not being heard.

We believe that being pro-choice means respecting the life of the woman and entrusting her to make decisions about her own life and body. Women who choose abortion do so for a wide range of reasons — rape, incest, financial situations, etc — and that choice is private one. Pro-choice means pro-woman, pro-child, pro-family.

Our organization was formed to provide a space to give a voice to the other side of the issue. We fundamentally believe that safe sex is the best sex, and Saint Louis University is not providing any services to the student body. Students should have access to contraception and resources on protecting themselves.

We’re here to give students access to condoms, information about safe sex practices and resources about reproductive choice.

I couldn’t agree more with this letter. Colleges are supposed to harbor tolerance and opposing ideas. Instead, SLU has completely abolished all opposition to the Pro-Life supporters, which is inherently wrong, Catholic university or not.

Hear, hear! I recently graduated from SLU and am now a graduate student at Georgetown University. Today I was delighted to see H*yas for Choice represented among other student groups tabling in the quad. I spoke briefly with the guy (!) at the table and told him, as an avid supporter of B*llikens for Choice, about the stipulations imposed on us and the secrecy required for the group to exist. His reply: “wow, I thought we had it bad.” Take a hint, SLU. According to US News & World Report, out of the top Jesuit universities, SLU ranks fifth, trailing behind Georgetown, Boston College, Fordham, and Marquette. Want to make it to the top slot? How about you start by giving “unpopular” opinions a voice and demonstrating that you REALLY care about “knowledge touching lives.”
