Waffle Heaven

Waffle Heaven

Craving ice cream at 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, many ice cream shops in the area were already closed. Searching for places to go, Boardwalk Waffles and Ice Cream came up in conversation. Feb. 4 was its opening day, and it was getting some buzz. Why, do you ask? Well the name says it all: waffle ice cream sandwiches. A dream come true right? Plus, they are open until midnight on Saturdays—the decision was made.

My friends and I headed to Maplewood where we found Boardwalk Waffles lit up cheerily from the inside. We entered and the scent of sweet, freshly made waffles enveloped me like a cozy blanket. The interior of the store was cute and small, with a long counter with the waffle makers in the back and the ice cream closer to the door. It had a rustic vibe, and was decorated to give the feel of a boardwalk. Tucked in front of the windows were some benches to enjoy your confectionary purchases.

The employees were weary but cheerful as they took our orders. We had the store to ourselves, but according to the employees it had not been that way all day. Apparently a line had formed out the door earlier and averaged about 70 people in the small space throughout the day. In other words, a fantastic opening at Boardwalk Waffles.

Now for the food; with a range of flavors that included Gooey Butter Cake, Cappuccino Chip, Bordeaux Black Cherry, Salty Caramel Swirl and Bailey’s Irish Cream (amongst several others) it was extremely difficult to choose which flavor to pick. The flavors also rotate each month, so these were just some for February! They are all Serendipity Ice Creams, so it was obvious that they would all be delectable.

The size of the sandwiches could be a quarter, half or whole waffle with a scoop of ice cream per quarter of the waffle. Once the waffles were cooked, ice cream was added and the entire thing was topped with powdered sugar. We sat down to enjoy our desserts at last, and enjoy we did.

It was difficult to savor our unique treats only because it was too delicious to eat slowly. The waffles were a flawless texture, crisp and crunchy on the outside while remaining soft and fluffy on the inside. The warmth of the waffles just barely melted the ice cream, making it the perfect balance of hot and cold. The waffle counteracted the sweetness of the ice cream and blended beautifully in my mouth. According to SLU student Sidney Thompson, “The combination of waffles and ice cream is the best thing to happen so far in 2017.” The fluffy waffles may have been a little messy to eat, but it was completely worth it.

As we were sitting, one of the shop owners, Eric Moore, sat down to talk to us. He just wanted to check in with us and ask us how the food was. No surprise, our response was emphatically positive. Moore revealed that he had been up since about 4:00 a.m. getting ready for the opening, but it seemed that his long day paid off. Even in his sleep deprived state, Moore appeared excited about his new shop and its future. We made small talk, but our sandwiches had disappeared quickly.

For any student (breakfast lover or not) looking for a new, yet classic, ice cream place, look no further. Leaving Boardwalk Waffles and Ice Cream that night, it was evident that this was a place I would be returning to very soon.
