Recruiting: Five down, one to go

With the commitment of 6-foot-2 Miles Reynolds from Chicago, Ill. on Oct. 24, the Saint Louis University men’s basketball team added its fifth recruit to its 2014 class. Reynolds, who also received offers from Division I programs such as the University of Iowa and SLU’s Atlantic 10 rival, the University of Dayton, adds a versatile point guard to what is shaping out to be a well-rounded class of recruits for the Billikens.

During his sophomore and junior seasons at Whitney Young High School, Reynolds has averaged 10.1 points per game and 2.7 assists per game.

Reynolds joins the class with Marcus Bartley, Austin Gillmann, Brett Jolly, and Davell Roby. Gillmann, a 6-foot-10 center from Oakville, Mo., adds size to the class. While only 195 lbs., his lengthy frame leaves room to build strength. The center has been a double-double machine for his Oakville High School, and SLU will look to him to add bulk in the paint. Gillmann visited St. Louis in May before committing to Saint Louis University in early July.

Marcus Bartley, a 6-foot-4 point guard from Decatur, Ill., will add versatility to the Billiken backcourt much like Reynolds. At MacArthur High School, Bartley is known for his ability to pass as well as his smooth shot from inside and beyond the arc. He facilitates the offense, taking shots only when available and showing an increasing skill for driving to the basket. He received offers from Northwestern University and Oklahoma State University before committing to SLU in September.

Davell Roby, a 6-foot-4 combination guard from Memphis, Tenn., became SLU’s first 2014 commit in June. For his AAU team, Roby averaged 8.9 points and 3.1 rebounds per game, with a Florida recruit, Chris Chiozza, beside him in the backcourt.

Brett Jolly, another 6-foot-10 big man, is a recent commitment to the Bills’ 2014 class. From Texas, Jolly went off to New Jersey to attend the Blair Academy, a prep school noted for graduating a handful of current NBA players, including Luol Deng and Charlie Villaneuva.

While many feared new head coach Jim Crews would suffer from having a late start on the recruiting trail, the quality commitments already heading to St. Louis have silenced doubters and have fans hoping Crews can build a respectable program committed to success year in and year out. While many are speculating on who will fill the final spot in SLU’s 2014 recruiting class, the newest addition to the gang, Reynolds, has already put in his vote; his AAU teammate, Pat McCaw. Also of Christian Brothers College High, MacCaw has garnered interest from a multitude of Division I programs, including Oklahoma State, Virginia Tech, and Loyola Chicago.
