Blue Crew, We Can’t Hear You

To the Editor:

I can’t lie, I wont deny it – of the four years that I have spent here at SLU, only this year have I really gotten into our watching and supporting our sports teams. It is a commonly known fact, although not openly admitted, that our school is widely apathetic. I am not here to write about SLU’s ever-present apathy towards various programs, issues, student concerns, or even the support we show our various athletic teams. I am writing concerning those who do actually come and “support” our Billikens.

Of the nine season home games our men’s basketball team has played, I have been to five. Missing three of those games were due to the fact that most of us have been out of town over the break. At each of those five games, I have realized something disconcerting about our fans. While there are a few who make it out to the games to cheer and support our team (and psych out our opponents), among others, there is always a quiet and reserved sea of blue with great floor seats next to our awesome band. I usually come with a group of no more than five others and somehow we seem to be louder than this cheering “crew”. I applaud the fact that these guys are present to support our team, but come on! It is okay to get a little loud sometimes!

Right now, we have a great team playing an even greater season. If you plan to come out, let them know you are there to support them. Our players are not mind readers; they can’t hear the cheers in your head!

To the Blue Crew: thanks for coming out, but remember you are the ones who should be leading us and representing our school spirit! It is truly embarrassing when the families and spectators, young and old, support us when we cheer, “BLUE CREW, WE CAN’T HEAR YOU!”

To the friends, family, students, faculty, and other members of Saint Louis University, I have only one thing to ask of you: If you do not already, come to the games, support your team, and enjoy a wonderful season. If you already do come, let our players and the other teams hear that it is no mistake that the Billikens come to WIN! Feel free to find our small group, usually somewhere near the floor, and join us in being loud and show your pride for our Billikens.
