‘You should pack away that jacket’

Brigid Kinsella February 26, 2009
A camera crew crashes the birthday party and all eyes are set on me. I start to panic at the idea of being on "Cops"-even though the worst offense I have received was a blue slip in the fourth grade for kicking a boy, who butted in line. I realize that, in fact, the crew of "Cops" is not chasing me.

New cheerleading movie quickly runs out of steam

Matt Smyser February 26, 2009
"This is NOT a cheerleading movie." Or at least that's what Fired Up! claims. Equal parts painfully vulgar and gleefully funny, Fired Up! is the latest entry into a recent surplus of cheerleading movies, but this one is not so much a cheerleading movie as it is an excuse to fling mindless and immature one liners in all directions.

“Little Shop of Horrors” delivers laughs, takes a big bite out of the winter blues

[email protected] February 26, 2009
Saint Louis University Theatre's production of "Little Shop of Horrors," a dark comic musical in the tradition of "Sweeney Todd," is a show that will make you laugh, squirm and take a second, suspicious look at that plant your roommate brought home from Christmas break.

Horror musical hits SLU

Maggie Szewczyk February 19, 2009
This weekend, the Saint Louis University Theatre takes a bite out of the University theater season. SLU Theatre is presenting a production of "Little Shop of Horrors," the rock musical based on the 1960 Roger Corman film of the same name and featuring songs by composer Alan Menken, to the main stage in Xavier Hall.

Windmills of My Mind

Kat Patke February 19, 2009
Since Valentine's Day has come and gone, the timing seems appropriate for me to go public with a revelation that I just can't hold back anymore. I haven't felt this way about anyone in a long time, and my heart flutters a little whenever I hear that melodious voice, saying those three special little words . SHUT IT DOWN! Yes.

Local theater is one for the ages

Sarah Fentem February 19, 2009
Walking in the Delmar Loop, one can't help but notice the Tivoli Theater. Its glowing pink sign and glittering, old-fashioned marquee dominate the street's landscape. This commanding architectural feature only seems fitting for an institution that has become synonymous with the revived neighborhood.

Bonnie Rosenberg February 19, 2009
This semester, the Museum of Contemporary Religious Art is hosting its second exhibition celebrating the museum's 15-year anniversary, an exhibit drawing from the oft-reoccurring theme of Christ's death and passion in contemporary art. Museum director, the Rev.

24 Frames Per Second

Will Holston February 19, 2009
Now that Valentines Day is but a distant memory and a half-eaten box of chocolate covered cherries sitting in the refrigerator, you might find yourself craving a little romance. Luckily for us all, there's a filmmaker out there who understands romance and whose films consistently capture the frenzy, the passion, the heartache and the dizzying collection of emotions that make up courtship and relationship drama.

Lifehouse lands at SLU for SAB’s annual spring concert

Allison Reilly February 19, 2009
Look for the light of Lifehouse on Saint Louis University's coast April 24, as the band headlines this year's spring concert. "They've been around a while and have made a comeback," said Kris Premier, president of the Student Activities Board. "[The band is] something everyone can enjoy.

Windmills of My Mind

Kara Sheehan February 12, 2009
In grade school, music preferences could be summed up with two names: 'N Sync and Britney Spears. While my friends were listening to these typical pop stars, I was listening to bigger and better names. I have my three awesome older brothers to thank for it.

Improv show suffers from lack of spontaneity

Gina Cassaro February 12, 2009
Last Tuesday, students gathered in the Busch Student Center for an improvisation-based Tim Meadows comical performance that left viewers less than impressed with its lack of creativity. "[The performance] was so highly advertised, but overall, it just wasn't worth the time I spent to watch it," said freshman Jordan Graham.

Through the button holes

Will Holston February 12, 2009
The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach-helmer Henry Selick is taking audiences down the rabbit hole in his new film, but this world isn't Alice's typical wonderland. Coraline, adapted from Stardust author Neil Gaiman's award winning fantastical and creepy novella of the same name, arrives in theaters at a time when animated films like WALL-E have proven that mediums traditionally oriented toward children's entertainment can provide more bang for your buck, no matter the age of the audience, than most over-scripted, star-heavy Hollywood blockbusters.
