In Memoriam

Editorial Board April 20, 2007
On Monday, April 16, 2007, an act of meaningless brutality stunned our nation: 23-year-old Cho Seung-Hui, a senior at Virginia Tech, shot and killed 32 people during the largest on-campus massacre in U.S. history. Our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathy go out to the families and friends of these students and faculty, to Virginia Tech and to the memories of the students themselves.

The Student Voice

Editorial Board March 30, 2007
It's been more than five weeks since Student Government Association elections. Approximately five weeks of classes remain. From this equidistant position, we feel it is appropriate to offer SGA both thanks and sincere suggestions. With these final days firmly in mind, we commend the accomplishments of this year's SGA senate and executive board.

Acting Locally

Editorial Board March 30, 2007
"Think globally, act locally." So reads a popular slogan invoked in countless speeches and bumper stickers. This phrase was first invoked in 1969 by Friends of the Earth, a confederation of environmentalists. In our increasingly globalized age, however, this slogan can be applied to all sorts of international concerns.

Spring Break-Ins

Editorial Board March 23, 2007
What do DeMattias Hall, Griesedieck Hall, Grand Forest Apartments and the Village Apartments have in common, other than housing students of Saint Louis University? All have been broken into-and the apartments, burglarized-during the 2006-07 academic year.

War and Peace

Editorial Board March 23, 2007
Article II, Section 1 of the Student Government Association's Constitution states that one of the Association's purposes is to act as the "official and final student voice on all appropriate matters" involving both students and the SLU community. As such, SGA has the right to pass any resolution it deems fit, provided the subject matter is "appropriate.

A Student Voice

Editorial Board March 2, 2007
During this week's Student Government Association meeting, International Student Federation senator Shahida Flores expressed her opinion: She claimed that The University News has not been accurately reflecting the voice of Saint Louis University students. We appreciate this criticism.

Election Preparation

Ladies and gentlemen: On Feb. 26, 2007, you will elect a new president, executive board and slew of senators for next year's Student Government Association. Before we, The University News, recommend actual candidates in our annual SGA Endorsements-we'll save that treat for next week-we feel it necessary to review a few pointers for election preparation.

Off-Campus Success

Sell out crowds demand attention, and so we direct our attention once more to the case of The Vagina Monologues. The Monologues have been derided by Saint Louis University administration as redundant, and have been summarily dismissed from the campus. This year, SLU is one of 16 Catholic universities in America that have banned the production on their campuses.

An Inconvenient Truth

On Monday, Feb. 12, 2006, a Washington University student was sexually assaulted in her own dormitory. Her assailant allegedly knocked on the door to her suite, forced his way into the room and then raped and robbed her. A Wash. U. spokesman claimed that this was the first sexual assault there by an outsider in at least seven years.

Up in the Gym…

Only one conclusion can be drawn about the newly-renovated Simon Recreation Center-it is a fabulous fitness free-for-all, and we can't think of a better use for 40,000 square feet of a former parking garage. One week has passed since the Rec Center's grand re-opening.

The Big Questions

defaultuser February 2, 2007
Student Government Association members spent almost half of last week's meeting thanking and remembering former associate vice president of student development Phil Lyons. They even renamed the senate chambers after him. From conversation alone, it is easy to recognize Phil as friend and boon to the Saint Louis University student body.

Safety Sound-off

defaultuser January 26, 2007
On Wednesday, Jan. 2007, Student Government Association President Evan Krauss gave his State of the Association speech. This 10-minute explication of SGA's current standing was evasive, to be sure-Krauss' thesis was actually a question, and his speech focused on what SGA hoped to achieve in the coming term rather than what it had already accomplished.
