Smoking debate ignites controversy

Travis Brimhall February 22, 2008
At the referendum debates on Tuesday night, Carly Caminiti and Emily Meyers mindlessly regurgitated their party line, while a pair of self-righteous pseudo-intellectuals (this writer included) scrambled to get a coherent thought together in response. No one could care less.

VP backs ban

Carly Caminiti February 22, 2008
This year, we are lucky to have the opportunity to vote on an extremely important public health issue on the SGA ballot: second-hand smoke exposure on campus. As such, we must act in the best interest of the well being of our campus and work to protect the health of everyone.

Revisiting the smoking issue

Joe Piehl February 22, 2008
As election day approaches our campus, I am a non-smoker concerned about the referendum to further limit smoking on campus. Even though DPS has stated that smoking in the parking garages and on sidewalks will be safe for smokers, I do not think people will walk to the edge of campus to smoke.

Former senator advocates fee

David Kilper February 22, 2008
As a former SLU undergraduate who campaigned in favor of the last student activity fee increase, I wish to counter Chris Wintrode's misleading commentary. ("Show SGA the money," Feb. 15). His attempt at a law-school style hypothetical distorts the truth about the current proposal.

From SGA, with love

SGA February 22, 2008
Dearest Constituent, I'm so glad you left that note for me, the members of SGA, in last week's paper. I began to wonder if you even noticed what I've been doing for you. I know it's easy to blame me for being distant; my busy schedule keeps me in meetings with administrators and student leaders.

Jazz and decay in the city of blues

Robert Singer February 22, 2008
The imperfect scat of Louis Armstrong chases me as I'm riding my bicycle down by the river. In that rough timbre of his trumpet, I hear imaginary cornet flairs radiating from steamboat bandstands, and some punk kid from Louisiana bringing all his wild bayou attitude up the muddy water, casting it out across this scattered, Midwestern city.

Global warming in our generation

Anthony Cozad February 22, 2008
Easter approaches, but another, equally important day is just around the corner: Earth Day. On Earth Day, we're supposed to remind ourselves of our role in, and dependence upon, the world in which we are thrive. When you look deeper, you see that Earth Day is, and should be, every single day of the year.

Changing climate at SLU

Samiksha Tarun February 22, 2008
Before I leave my room, I sometimes forget to turn the lights off. When I am in the shower, I can shower for at least half an hour. And when I drive my car, I never think about the gas consumption. These ignorant actions on my part destroy the world and culminate in two feared words: Global warming.

Sunday dinner, small talk, politics and St. Louis superdelegate sightings

George Caputa February 22, 2008
Sunday night is family dinner night, and it is something I always enjoy. Usually, my family sits down to a home-cooked meal. But, on special occasions, we go out to eat. My sister was in town last weekend, and Bartilino's was having their soft opening, so we decided to check it out.

Caring for Kirkwood, Northern Illinois

Editorial Board February 22, 2008
Two weeks ago, on Feb. 7, six people were killed and two were wounded in Kirkwood, Mo., when a resident opened fire during a city council meeting. Last week, on Feb. 14, Valentine's Day, six people were killed and 16 were wounded at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill.

Show SGA the money

Chris Wintrode February 15, 2008
Our student Government Association needs a new theme song, and I have a good suggestion. Remember Donald Trump's "Apprentice" theme? The lyrics begin, "Money, Money, Money, Money . Money!" The O'Jays, singing "For the Love of the Money," might have had our student government in mind when they were singing this song back in the '70s.

SLU women silenced, again

John Nolan February 15, 2008
Saint Louis University's women's rights group Una planned to hold a show today called "A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant, and a Prayer." The show was to be presented tonight at 7 p.m. in Tegeler Hall. The Department of Student Life and Dean of Students Scott Smith informed Una that it was not allowed to show the piece on SLU's campus.
