Senior tackles smoking situation

Sean MacLennan February 15, 2008
There is a constant theme running through American campuses, and society in general, of over-legislation, especially legislating things like common courtesy. We see that with the proposed ban on smoking. I admit, it's a little rude to light up in the middle of a tight crowd (though those are actually pretty rare on campus), but that does not mean that smoking should be banned.

Faculty Senate responds

defaultuser February 15, 2008
The editorial, "Living Up to Leadership," published in the Feb. 8 issue of The University News, posed the question ".can an administration that the faculty senate has called "fear-mongering" be truly effective?" This attribution was made without reference to either an official Senate document or a statement by a Senate officer.

Step out of your life, into understanding

Dorotea Lechkova February 8, 2008
Sometimes, life unexpectedly shows us little glimpses of the lives of others. A few months ago, I was completing some volunteer work for an inquiry class when something very particular happened. It was a completely normal day, and, had I not paid attention, none of what happened would have mattered.

Living up to leadership

Editorial Board February 8, 2008
Lent is a season of sacrifice, especially for Catholics. From Ash Wednesday to Easter, Catholics abstain from a sinful indulgence of their choice-sugar, smoking and sloth top the list every year-to mirror the sacrifices of Jesus Christ. And after a rollicking Super Bowl, a ballot-swamped Super Tuesday and a gumbo-stuffed Mardi Gras, we've had our fill of worldly excess.

Smoking may go up in smoke

Editorial Board February 8, 2008
Across the campus and across the globe, smokers are feeling the pressure to extinguish their cigarettes in public places. Smoking is already banned in all public places in Arizona and California. It is prohibited in all enclosed workplaces in Ireland, Italy, Estonia and the United Kingdom.

Former senator critiques election

Jared M. Walsh February 8, 2008
In recent years, SGA has sadly become a "good ole boys club." As a former Arts and Sciences Senator, I used to be on the "inside." Which makes me wonder, why is it that the Election Commission continually allows for the formation of election tickets, thereby eliminating nearly all possibility of an independent candidate's election? How many individuals would have run for a Senate seat, but were not asked to be part of the process, by one of the two tickets? To me, it is ridiculous that independent candidates are not given more of a chance by limiting the formation and power of tickets.

SLU trashes values for star coach

Daniel L. Schlafly Jr. February 8, 2008
Archbiship Raymond Burke is right to object to basketball coach Rick Majerus' public endorsement of abortion and embryonic stem cell research. As an all-too-prominent representative of the University, Majerus' statements on any issue cannot be dismissed as personal comments.

Vaginas monologue against violence

Jennifer Lay February 8, 2008
"Vagina" is not a dirty word. One should not be made to feel ashamed, inferior or sinful because she has a vagina and embraces that vagina. Women all over the world are suffering; vaginas are suffering. And now, they are speaking out. The week of Feb. 11 to Feb.

Alumnus dissects ‘Catholicism’

Matt Emerson February 8, 2008
The Editorial Board of The University News writes in its editorial from Jan. 25 ("Tempest in a universi-teapot")that the fundamental question of the Burke-Majerus feud concerns "the nature and purpose of a university." However, the editorial essentially ignores the very word that makes this entire issue worth discussing.

‘Generation Entitlement’ enjoys narcissism

NICOLE PUHL February 8, 2008
THEY CALL US "Generation Y," the "Second Baby Boom," and sometimes even "Generation Nexters." But what about "Generation Entitlement"? Stars of MTV's "My Super Sweet 16" surely exude a sense of entitlement, but dubbing a whole generation as such has seemed a bit rash by my standards.

No fear for the new year

Samiksha Tarun February 8, 2008
How did it go by so quickly? Already, more than one month of 2008 has passed. Just yesterday, we were writing New Year's resolutions. Today, we are reminded of the passage of time and, perhaps guiltily, of those resolutions. Have you gotten closer to the goals you set at the beginning of the year? Are you any closer to accomplishing the things you want to accomplish? Are you any closer to being the person you want to be? As I reflect upon these questions, I realize that my own response is a disheartening no.

Predicting politics in The World in 2008

Allison Reilly February 8, 2008
It's February already, and I can't believe I've gone this long without The Economist's World in 2008. No, seriously. This situation is dire. This annual special outlines the past year's events and makes predictions for the next. It covers the most prominent issues of local, regional and international importance.
