No new student taxes

Chris Wintrode February 1, 2008
To the Editor: On January 23, 2008, SGA President Andrew Clifton delivered the annual State of the Association address where he laid out his plan to alter the current procedure for increasing the student activity fee. From his speech proposal, Clifton makes one thing clear: He wants to remove power from the people and put it in the hands of his friends in the Senate.

Inside student government

Get involved. Two words have never been more overused on this campus since the Most Reverend DuBourg decided in 1818 to set up a school in a private residence just west of the Mississippi. The person using it usually assumes the following: You have some internal desire to make changes on some grand scale, you're not already involved at the level he or she finds satisfactory and, finally, you have the time to participate in whatever he or she happens to be peddling as "leadership experience" that day.

Representing the University

Doug Mersman February 1, 2008
To the Editor: I graduated from Saint Louis University in 1998 with a bachelor's degree in biology. I owe a lot to SLU and very much appreciate the education I received during my four years at the university. That having been said, I believe that Men's Basketball Coach Rick Majerus should be disciplined, perhaps even fired, for his recent comments supporting abortion and stem-cell research.

Recognizing standards at SLU

Kevin Grillot February 1, 2008
As a student at Saint Louis University, I wish to speak to the comments made by our basketball coach. However, when I speak in public, I know that I am more then a student. Learning from past experience (at only 20 years of age), I must understand that, when in public, I always represent organizations in which I hold leadership, such as the Vice President of Students for Life or as a Senator from the College of Education and Public Service in the Student Government Association.

Unlocking campus safety

Editorial Board February 1, 2008
A knock on the door and a note slipped under the jamb-That's the notice that University employees gave to Marchetti East, the Village and Language House residents before changing the locks on all apartment doors this week. With little fuss and less explanation, the Department of Housing and Residence Life made sure that more than 780 Saint Louis University students-approximately 10 percent of the undergraduate population-queued up and shuffled about with new locks and new keys.

Freeing speech

John W. Crowe February 1, 2008
To the Editor: I read with disgust the comments made by Archbishop Burke regarding Men's Basketball Coach Rick Majerus' personal beliefs relative to "pro-choice" while attending a political rally. Majerus has a First Amendment right to free speech. What he said was not as a representative of Saint Louis University or of the Roman Catholic Church.

Media action and info-ethics

Tim Wright February 1, 2008
Pope Benedict XVI recently called upon the media community to exercise "info-ethics." Put another way, the pope chided the media at large with sometimes creating reality rather than merely reporting it. Would that some local news outlets heed the words of the Holy Father instead of continuing an unfortunate trend of sensationalist yellow journalism.

Endorsements: McCain, Obama

Editorial Board February 1, 2008
Super Tuesday, that annual smorgasbord of caucus and primary-based political drama, is just around the corner. This Tuesday, Feb. 5, Missouri and 23 other states will hold elections to nominate Democratic and Republican Party delegates, who will ultimately select candidates for the presidential election in November.

Leading others astray

Nina Bryhn February 1, 2008
To the Editor: The University is up in arms about Archbishop Burke reprimanding Men's Basketball Coach Rick Majerus for his public support of abortion. Majerus tells us he has a right to his opinions. Again, as so often before, the core of the issue is missed.

Nothin’ but mammals

Roberta Singer February 1, 2008
The point of my life is not to make babies. I feel I have to throw that out there, because a lot of the rhetoric of evolutionary biology nowadays centers around Richard Dawkins' famous interpretation of evolution, selfish-gene theory. With selfish-gene theory, individual genes, as manifested in an organisms' phenotype (physical characteristics apparent when genes interact with the environment), are the driving force of evolution.

Call for responses

Louis Peters February 1, 2008
To the Editor: Among the most disappointing aspects of the recent incident involving Men's Basketball Coach Rick Majerus and Archbishop Burke is the lack of SLU student and faculty response to the Majerus' public rejection of a basic teaching of the church and the apparent lack of concern for social justice-the most basic of which is the right to life.

Bridging the gap between leadership and the diocese

Anthony Cozad February 1, 2008
As expected, Coach Majerus' pro-choice and pro-stem cell research comments have drawn the ire of one well known and very outspoken Archbishop Burke. Burke was clearly not going to tolerate such comments and now "trusts" that Saint Louis University will discipline Majerus.
