SLUnion Rally Set For Quad I This Afternoon

Topping the one thousand survey mark, the Student Government Association’s Project SLUnion continues its momentum.

The student support time period will culminate with the Rally for the Union today at 2 p.m. in Boland Plaza outside Griesedieck Complex.

“It’s a visible show of support for the Union,” said SGA President Jay Perry.

Perry will be speaking at the event, fielding questions and promoting the project. KSLU will be providing music for the event.

Petitions will also be circulated and additional surveys will be available.

The rally’s goal, according to Perry, is to “get people to come by and sign some petitions, give their input, and get their questions answered.”

Nick Milette said he hadn’t really heard much about the rally or the entire project. “Yeah, it’s not very popular, but it’s a good idea.”

“It’s definitely needed,” said sophmore Maggie Steimle.

Graduate student Peggy Nebel explained how much the BMC has lost popularity since she was a freshman:

“When I was a freshman, there were a lot of activities in BMC that were well attended, but it slowly has dwindled,” Nebel said.

In the month after the rally, Project SLUnion surveys will be tabulated and compiled. The preliminary drawings are to be completed by mid-November.

The final report will be presented to the SGA Senate for approval on Nov. 24 and the Board of Trustees on Dec. 11.

The initial plan for Project SLUnion was presented before the senate at the October 6 meeting and was divided into two parts.

Part A consisted of constructing a new student union that could include a consolidated dining service, offices for each student organization and locations for major events.

Plan B consisted of a complete overhaul of the existing Busch Memorial Center.
