Tennis Finish Season At 3-1

The success of the Saint Louis University women’s tennis team this fall can be contributed to one thing: Health.

A season ago they didn’t have it, and limped to a 6-17 record. Courtney Hague-SLU’s No. 1 both this year and last-missed much of the season with mononucleosis. Jayasree Kuravilla tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee. And Andra Wilcox-this year’s No. 2-missed time with a back injury.

But this year all three are healthy and are largely responsible for the Billikens’ 3-1 record.

SLU finished its fall campaign last weekend at Western Illinois, registering a 5-1 performance, getting singles wins from Julie Siemers in the No. 3 slot, Ingrid Habony at No. 4 and freshman Vicki Zielinski at No. 5. Siemers and Hague won their No. 2 doubles match, 8-1, and Wilcox and Zielinski won at No. 3 doubles.

“We did well,” Hague said. “This team has a lot of depth. We’re strong throughout the lineup.”

Two weeks ago they dominated, winning 14 of 17 matches at the Memphis Invitational. Six of SLU’s seven singles players won at least one match, and Siemers-in the No. 2 slot-won four matches on her way to the championship. Zielinski also won the championship at No. 4.

“We haven’t even gotten to the bulk of our schedule yet,” Coach Derek Mills said. “The way we’re practicing . is a step in the right direction.”

And practice is all the Billikens will be doing until the spring. The spring season begins Feb. 5.
