The Black Student Association sponsored its first annual run/walk this past Sunday, Nov. 7 and over 25 people participated. The fund-raiser brought in over $490 for the American Lung Association.

“The goal of the run/walk was to raise $350 and we exceeded our goal,” said David Stamps, BSA member and chairperson of the event. The run/walk took place on Saint Louis University’s campus. It started outside Griesedieck Hall, went down the Mall, around the outside of campus and then back down the Mall to Griesedieck.

“The run/walk was three miles and lasted about one hour,” said James Jones, a volunteer. The walk started at 1:30 p.m. Two water stations were located at each end of campus, in case the runners became thirsty while running.

The money raised by the BSA came from individual donors and from the runners. If the participants wanted to donate money they could, but it was not a requirement.

“I donated money, but I did not run,” said Becca Frazier.

Most of the participants in the run/walk were not BSA members. “Over half of the runners were not black. BSA activities are open to everyone,” said Eddie Holman, BSA president. BSA members served as volunteers at the run/walk or were signing up runners at a table outside Griesedeck.

The run/walk was not the first event sponsored by BSA this year. Earlier this year BSA organized a Halloween party for children and held a retreat for its members.

Upcoming events include Black History Month in February. During this month, speakers, movie nights and various other events that showcase African-American traditions.

“We are looking for more campus-wide programming. BSA is not for blacks only. We want to work with other organizations,” said Eddie Holman.
