SLU Senior Participates In Variety Of Activities, Gets Involved In College Experience

Darren Clendenin defines involvement.

This Saint Louis University student will graduate in December with a degree in psychology, a certificate in business and a long resume of college activities.

Most students get involved in several clubs or organizations and feel that it is enough. Not Clendenin. He submerged himself into the SLU experience.

“[By] being involved in so many different organizations you get the most out of SLU’s experience and by not being involved you are missing out,” said Clendenin, a native St. Louisan.

His involvement began the day he walked on campus. Clendenin has worked in the Office of Student Life since his freshman year four and a half years ago. Throughout his time at Student Life he has performed many different tasks, ranging from clerical work to helping assist the director of programming.

“You have to be up on the University and know what is going on around campus,” Clendenin said.

Student Life is not the only four-and-a-half year commitment that Clendenin has made. He has been a SLU 101 leader four summers, helping to introduce incoming freshmen to campus life. Tack on KSLU to that list of four-and-a-half year activities and it will be complete.

Some not-so-lengthy commitments include two years of serving the Oriflamme organization. Also, during his senior year he was a Community Development Assistant in Reinert Hall.

“It was a different experience to live in the dorms as a senior,” Clendenin said.

Other organizations and positions in which Clendenin has been involved include the Outdoors Club, Student Activities Board and Amnesty International. Clendenin served as a member on the Damage Review Board through the Department of Residence Life and as a Sexual Assault Peer Educator. Clendenin helped found the Commuter Student Alliance. He felt it was important for commuters to have a voice on campus.

This year Clendenin helped out the Community Outreach Center by being an event organizer for Make a Difference Day.

There is no rest to be had during the summer for Clendenin. Last summer he worked for the Upward Bound Program as an instructor and a Residential Advisor.

So where is he headed after graduation? Clendenin plans to stay around the University for awhile. He is applying to SLU’s MBA program and hopes to eventually enter the Masters of Health Administration program. He ultimately wants to manage hospitals.
