Fraternities Promote Greek Life During Spring Rush, Offer Variety Of Activities, Events

Free food and fun abound this week as the Saint Louis University fraternities kick-off Spring Rush.

While smaller than Fall Rush, Spring Rush still attracts more than 100 young men looking to participate in Greek life on the University campus.

Newly elected Vice President of Recruitment for the Inter-Fraternity Council Evan Hart explained, “Rush is the procedure that men go through in order to see if they want to become a part of a Greek organization.”

Rush Week begins with Formal Rush tonight in the Busch Memorial Center. Tonight’s event will be different from last semester’s.

“We tried to cut down on time by putting everybody into one big room and bringing the fraternities to them,” Hart said.

Unlike some universities, SLU works under a “Dry Rush” system. “Dry Rush” means fraternity members cannot drink or be in the presence of alcohol with rushees or potential rushees. “Dry Rush” ends next Friday after bids go out.

Every fraternity strives to offer new and exciting events to attract new members during Rush Week.

Delta Sigma Phi will be showing the Rams game on Sunday as a Rush event in their chapter room which is equipped with a big screen TV and leather furniture.

One rush event for Alpha Delta Gamma will be a ski trip to Hidden Valley in Eureka. Rushees will ski free. Lasertag in Belleville is one event on the schedule for the Sigma Chi fraternity.

Members of the Greek community offered their advice and opinions on Spring Rush.

“Go in with an open idea and an open mind,” Hart advised.

Derrick Cabrera, president of Alpha Delta Gamma, added, “Don’t rush into it. It’s the decision of a lifetime.”

Mike Kunderman, president of Delta Sigma Phi, offered his advice to any student interested in participating in the Spring Rush events.

“Give everybody a fair chance,” Kunderman advised. “Don’t listen to past reputations.”

IFC president Brian Black agreed.

“Find the group that your individuality will show in and not just be a part of,” Black said.
