Eckert’s Features Fall

Pick a pack of apples. Or how about pick a pumpkin from a patch? How about both?

Fall is in the air in St. Louis. Yes, fall officially begins Oct. 21, but if you take a look around or step outside, you’ll see indications of fall everywhere.

The colorful leaves, the nippy air, the caramel apples and of course you’ll see people coming back with their freshly picked apples and pumpkins.

What? Yes, their own personal apples and pumpkins, to make their own caramel apples and, of course, Jack-o-Lanterns for Halloween.

Being college students does not disqualify us from having a little childlike fun. Social calendars for October can include things like apple-picking, visiting the pumpkin patch and going on hayrides.

The best time to get your apples and pumpkins is this weekend. In a trip to one of Eckert’s three farms, you can participate in both activities this weekend only. The next couple weekends, only pumpkins will be available.

Or you could wait until next weekend, when dog owners will be dressing up their dogs in costumes for a contest at Eckert’s. If you don’t have a dog, just go and laugh at the dogs in the contest-err-I mean to encourage them.

Your day will start with a hayride to the picking location of your choice….apples or pumpkins.

After the hayride to the apple farm, start picking your apples. Feel free to eat as many apples as you can, they are free. All the apples you don’t eat you have to pay for; so eat up!

On to the pumpkin patch.

When you are dropped off in the patch, watch out for the squashed pumpkins. They are no fun to step in. When picking a pumpkin, it is a good idea to make sure it sits up straight, and turn it around to make sure it doesn’t have any holes or cracks.

The smaller the pumpkin the less it is going to cost. As far as pumpkin shapes-look for a very plump one if you will be making pumpkin pie, from it or one with at least one clean, nice-sized side for optimal carving capabilities.

When you are done catch the next hayride back to the main farm, where you pay for your fresh-picked goods.

When you check out don’t forget to get some caramel sauce for your apples.

If you feel like staying into the evening, from dusk till 10 p.m. there is a haunted hayride, for -$4.

There are two Eckerts farms near Saint Louis University. One in Bellvielle, Ill. and one in Millstadt, ILl. It takes about 40 minutes to get to each, but the drive is worth the fun, call (618) 234-4406 to get more information and directions.
