Contrary to what some may think, rats are not running rampant in Saint Louis University’s Billiken Club.
The eating facility, located in the lower level of the Busch Memorial Center, received a score of 87-an A rating-on Monday, Feb. 26 after an inspection by the St. Louis Health Division.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch restaurant ratings had listed “rats” as the reason for the grade-a description that isn’t completely accurate, according to Bill McGeorge, director of University Dining Services.
“Earlier this semester we saw evidence of a rodent,” McGeorge said.
“There was a presence of rat droppings in the lower level storeroom, but none of the rat itself.”
Weekly inspections and monthly reports are conducted and issued by a pest-elimination company. McGeorge noted that rodents are usually attracted to food sources, such as trash dumpsters and storage spaces.
“We try to keep these food sources to a minimum, to keep from attracting creatures,” McGeorge said.
No evidence of rodents has been seen recently, McGeorge said.
Corrective measures, including an inspection of the facility’s storerooms, have been taken.
Violations listed in the restaurant ratings section require immediate correction within 10 days of the inspection.
