Get Around

MetroLink
Bi-State Development Agency
231-2345

Since its inception in 1993, MetroLink has become St. Louis’
easiest mode of public transportation. The Grand MetroLink Station,
located south of Reinert Hall on the Grand Blvd. bridge is just a
short walk from both the Frost and Health Sciences Center campuses,
or you can catch a ride on the Billiken Busline, which will drop
you off right in front of the station.

From the Grand station, you can hop on a train headed to
downtown and visit the Arch grounds or Laclede’s Landing. Trains
also run by Union Station, Savvis Center and Busch Stadium. Next
time you fly out of the St. Louis International Airport, take the
Metrolink; it is often faster than driving.

A one-ride ticket is good for two hours in one direction only.
It is highly recommended that you purchase a ticket when riding.
Although the tickets are not checked regularly, if you’re caught
without one, a hefty fine will be handed to you. Tickets to ride
MetroLink cost $1.25 for each ride. Trains run from 5 a.m. to 1
a.m. daily.

Public Buses
Bi-State Development Agency
231-2345

In the realm of public safety, the bus is king. This couldn’t be
more true in St. Louis. Bi-State Buses are like melting pots on
wheels, and understandably so. Most people would rather pay a buck
to get to their destination than to sit in downtown traffic or pay
high parking fees at downtown hotspots or the airport.

Convenient and cheap, fares are $1.25 and transfers are only
$.25. From Saint Louis University, you have many options. By taking
the #70 Grand bus, you can be easily whisked away to the ethnically
diverse South Grand neighborhood. The #93 Lindell bus travels to
many hangouts, including the Central West End, Forest Park,
Washington University’s campus and downtown Clayton. To get to the
Galleria mall, transfer from the Lindell bus to the #47 Cross
County bus.

Laclede Cab
652-3456

Located less than a mile from campus, Laclede Cab will be able
to swing by and pick you up in minutes. Laclede Cab offers 24-hour
service seven days a week. The company’s rate are $1.50 for each
mile and $1 for each additional passenger.

If you’re out on the town, don’t expect to simply hail a cab.
Cabs don’t cruise around town like they do in other major
metropolitan cities, so if you need one, call for one.

Billiken Busline
977-2820

The Billiken Busline is convenient and free for all SLU students
and it provides the best way to get to SLU’s Health Sciences
Center. There are numerous stops at both the Frost and HSC
campuses. There is also a stop at the Grand MetroLink station. The
line runs Monday thru Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. In the evenings
you can catch the Billiken van which runs Monday thru Thursday from
6 p.m. to midnight. Billiken Busline schedules are available at the
Busch Memorial Center front desk.

A new addition to the Busline is the weekend shuttle. It will
run every half-hour from 12 p.m. to 1 a.m. every Saturday.
Residential students can take the bus from behind Griesedieck to
the Esquire Theatre and Schnuck’s on Clayton Road, Tropicana
Bowling Lanes, the Galleria and Brentwood Square.

SLU Public Safety
977-3000

After dark, SLU’s Department of Public Safety provides an escort
service. You can get an escort seven days a week at any hour, day
or night. SLU’s Student Handbook advises students not to hesitate
“to call them, even if you have a short distance to walk.” For
those who have a car, public safety officers also provide jump
starts and assistance if you lock your keys in your car.

Public Safety has a phone at the Grand MetroLink stop. At the
push of a button, you will be connected to a Public Safety
dispatcher who will send an officer to pick you up. The service is
particularly good for students returning from home who have a lot
of luggage. Regardless of the reason, Public Safety will pick up
any SLU student from the Grand station.

Also, Public Safety has enhanced the security of campus by
initiating a taxi program–although it isn’t free. Under the new
program, any SLU student who gets stranded anywhere in the St.
Louis area for any reason may simply call Public Safety–collect no
less–and give them your name and location.

DPS then calls the taxi service who picks the student up and
drops them off at DPS headquarters in DuBourg Public Safety. The
student signs a voucher before being escorted to their campus
residence. The student’s account is charged later for the taxi
fee.
