Strictly St. Louis

Gus’s. Ted Drewe’s. Toasted ravioli.

St. Louisans know these places too well. But our out-of-town
friends may have never heard of the things that strictly say, “St.
Louis.”

Whenever a St. Louisan has a guest from out of town, the one
place that the native takes his or her friend is Ted Drewes.

Ted Drewe’s serves frozen custard at two locations: one on South
Grand, which is only open form May to Labor Day, and one on Watson,
which is open from February to November. You can purchase a
Terramizzou, All Shook Up or a Hawaiian Delight. Or you could get
everyone’s favorite: a chocolate concrete. Don’t worry about trying
to find Ted Drewe’s yourself; just ask a St. Louis friend who lives
on your floor and tell that person that you want to go. They will
gladly take you into frozen custard heaven.

Right down the street from the Anheuser-Busch Brewery, Gus’s
Pretzels is easily everyone’s favorite place for pretzels. St.
Louis once had numerous pretzel places, but now they have dwindled
down to a few–and Gus’s is the top dog. Gus’s also has huge party
pretzels that are great for a party of about 10 or so.

Everyone has heard of Chicago-style and New York-style
pizza.

But very few people know that St. Louis has its own style of
pizza, and one restaurant in the area has perfected it. Imo’s,
serving St. Louis since 1964, specializes in pizzas that are
paper-thin.

Made with provel cheese, Imo’s pizzas have made foreigners to
St. Louis fall in love with the unique style of pizza. Cecil
Whittaker’s also makes the St. Louis-style pizza.

Both places deliver to students on campus, but if you really
want to enjoy the St. Louis-style pizza, head to the Imo’s
restaurant on Hampton off of Highway 40.

The other food that St. Louis is known for is toasted ravioli.
Sure, it’s your basic idea of ravioli–meat stuffed in a square of
pasta–but take it one step further by adding a breaded mixture to
the outside and you’re in heaven.

A sure place to find this St. Louis treat? Try any restaurant on
The Hill (southwest of Midtown, around the Kingshighway and Hampton
area) or just head to the Pasta House on campus .
