SLU has made headlines lately for its research work, amassing recognition from both local and national sources alike.

SLU’s professors and researchers continue to publish their hard work and brilliant findings in scientific journals. And, if you look closely, they’re often quoted in the Post-Dispatch and other national papers.

Today, for instance, if you pick up a copy of The New York Times you will see SLU’s own Dr. Hitchcock interviewed for his expertise advice.

But while SLU professors show off what they know, how many SLU students know about this? Much SLU research makes national acclaim but is not even recognized on our own campus.

SLU students should be proud of the work that goes on at SLU. Some things they should know about: Dr. Minteer, in the biology department, continues fascinating research on developing hydrogen fuel cells; she and her students have received numerous awards. The Herpevac trial, for which GlaxoSmithKline has granted SLU $36.8 million, is the largest clinical trial SLU has ever attempted. SLU’s research labs are conducting research with anthrax and the plague-both specialized (and attention-grabbing) areas of research.

Currently, SLU is also conducting research in developing drugs for asthma, lung tumors and Alzheimer’s disease. Some students participate in this research through the medical school. And yet other students, undergraduates even, are doing research of their own.

As a university, SLU’s goal is to generate knowledge. The point is, you should know about this.
