Already Meeting Expectations

Every student received an e-mail on Monday: “On behalf of the entire Executive Board of the Student Government Association, it is our great pleasure to inform you that we have created an upper-class scholarship fund, which has money available for immediate distribution.”Thank you-it’s about time.Upper-class scholarships have been a hotbed issue for SGA for at least six years. And, in six years, little has been done. A few scholarships have been set up in the past, but with no staying power; none could continue after inception.Joe Cirillo, SGA’s financial vice president, chose to go small with the scholarships’ size this year. And while some may be disappointed by the availability of only three scholarships-after so many years of expectation-they will be happy to know that this small size does not reflect the amount of money available. The aim of this year’s SGA is to continue offering scholarships, and perhaps eventually larger ones, by putting away money to be accessed in future years. We must start small to aim big. This week, SGA compiled a list of 12 goals for the upcoming year. With the establishment of the upper-class scholarship fund, SGA can already cross one goal off its list. The other goals include renovating the Simon Recreation Center, expanding campus wireless Internet, examining parking fees, cost and space and examining dining and library hours. These goals are all very specific: For instance, SGA plans to review posting policies for the campus. This is a good thing and an improvement from past years, in which administrations set much broader goals. Under such exact expectations, SGA can be held accountable. Moreover, these goals seem reasonably achievable within the SGA administration’s year-long term.A very interesting goal that SGA has set for itself is publicizing the Ride Board, a list of names and destinations to connect traveling students with a carpool ride. This is a unique project with an incredibly helpful potential outcome.SGA has also set out to examine and improve the garbage and recycling programs-another reasonable and necessary goal. This year, with scholarships as well as other goals, SGA has laid out a game plan that is worthwhile. In all of their new projects, we wish SGA the same success they have had in implementing the upper-class scholarship program.
