Saint Louis University’s 2005-2006 year-in-review: The University broke ground on a $64-million Research Building and plans to break ground on a $77-million on-campus Arena. The University’s President Lawrence Biondi, S.J., was named 2005 St. Louis Citizen of the Year and Fathers Doody and Barry, key figures in Campus Ministry, resigned. SLU accepted hundreds of students dislocated by Hurricane Katrina, and student groups worked to provide relief to the New Orleans area. After 10 years of being in the Conference USA, all SLU sports joined the Atlantic-10 Conference and wasted no time making their mark. And with more than 100 Chartered Student Organizations, campus events have kept people busy.Thirty years down the road, if you return to SLU, stop by Pius XII Library. You’ll be able to read the annual events at our wonderful Jesuit University from every year since 1913. But when you look to find a chronicle of the events listed above, the events that shaped YOUR college years, you will find a hole. The 2005-2006 school year will be a blank spot. As if nothing happened. No compiled records of these events will exist. In order to keep the hole in SLU’s history from growing, students must vote YES on Referendum A to reinstate funding for Archive Yearbook. Used as a tool by the library’s archive and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, Archive is an essential record of Saint Louis University’s rise to the upper echelon of Jesuit institutions in the United States. For the past several decades, a small fee added to students’ tuitions has traditionally funded Archive. Voting YES on Referendum A will reinstate this $5-per-semester fee and allow production to continue on the 2006-2007 yearbook. The history of Archive is rich. As recently as 2003, Archive was awarded fourth place at the College Media Association’s National Conference. Archive’s skewed design in 2005 was recognized by publication consultants around the nation for bringing an innovative landscape format to the reader. Yet, the perception of the yearbook program at SLU has not always been positive. In recent years, the SLU community has not been impressed with the product created by Archive staff, and, therefore, we have failed. After all, the yearbook is created to be all about YOU, and if you, our customers, are not happy, changes must be made. The editorial published in the Feb. 9 edition of The University News highlighted crucial points that Archive staff must take into consideration. First, a high-quality publication will only come from a high-quality staff: If the referendum passes, we will begin recruiting this semester to fill leadership roles. Archive will also have a renewed emphasis on obtaining portrait pictures of as many students as possible. We plan to hold picture days early in the year, set up convenient locations for students and call on student groups to promote having student portraits taken. Also, Archive will strive to increase the quality of the content by increasing the coverage of Chartered Student Organizations and working closely with SGA. According to the previous University News editorial, Archive should limit its size in order to focus on and increase the quality of event coverage in the book. We think the yearbook needs to be more than just a summary and scattering of events during the year.Another concern heard from students is the release of the book the following school year. Currently, Archive is released in September to preserve end-of-the-year events. After the referendum passes on Feb. 27, however, Archive will investigate the possibility of releasing the publication in May, prior to students leaving for the summer. Archive staff is prepared to make a product that will serve its customers. To do so, we must have feedback from SLU students. To begin this process, we have established a Web site with a short survey to gather students’ thoughts and opinions. Please take five minutes to let us know what YOU want in YOUR book by visiting http://pages.slu.edu/org/archive.When you vote on Feb. 27 on Banner, please remember the highlights of this school year. Have you enjoyed your experience at SLU? Think back to your freshman year in high school. Does anything come to mind or has everything become a blur? Hopefully you have a yearbook to look back and remember those fun high school years. For only $5 per semester, isn’t it worth it to remember these college years? Vote YES to make an investment that will last a lifetime and longer.Dan Mueller is a sophomore in the John and Lucy Cook School of Business and editor in chief of SLU’s Archive yearbook.
