To the Editor:
While I would be the first to agree that the recycling program at SLU could use some improvement, I would like to shed some light on some questions raised by Ms. Schwarz’s letter last week:?While only plastics 1 and 2, aluminum and steel cans are collected in the dorm and apartment recycling bins, cardboard recycling dumpsters can be found behind Griesedieck, Fusz, Reinert and DeMattias halls and on the Laclede side of the BSC.? Complete information can be found at www.slu.edu/services/residence/housing/recycling.html.
I believe that Ms. Schwarz hit the nail on the head when she stated that a successful recycling program requires “an energetic response from students on campus,” as this is precisely what SLU is lacking.?In fact, the greatest hindrance to recycling on campus has been students throwing trash in recycling bins and low participation. While widespread paper, bottle and can recycling in common areas such as the BSC would be ideal, it is simply not possible without student support.?Interested students can contact me at [email protected] or attend a Just Earth! meeting any Monday night at 7 in Ritter Hall, Room 202.
