To the Editor:
The recent article, in the Feb. 23 issue, in which SLU enters discussion of Danish cartoons was a timely and thoughtful piece. The controversy it addressed is particularly relevant for a University that values free exploration and expression in the academic realm but also stresses the fundamental dignity of all members of its community. It is important for the voices of SLU’s Muslim students, faculty and staff to be heard.
?I am concerned, though, about a misquotation that, given the sensitivity of the topic, could be regarded as offensive.?The article quotes me as referring to the “complexity of the people who make up the Muhammad-worshipping community.?What I, in fact, said was, “Muslim worshipping community.”?Muslims do not worship Muhammad, and to suggest such would rightly be regarded by Muslims as a blasphemous statement.
?While I’m sure the error was inadvertent, it is important that misrepresentations and misconceptions about Islam or any other religion not be perpetuated. A correction of this misquotation would be appreciated.
