Res Life Responds

To the Editor:

I am writing in response to the letter authored by Katie Lewis and printed in the March 2, 2006, issue of The University News. I feel that Ms. Lewis unfairly characterized the Department of Housing and Residence Life as unhelpful and blamed my staff because she wasn’t able to get a single apartment. I’d like to share another perspective on the housing sign-up process.

The Housing and Residence Life staff work diligently to try to provide accurate information regarding the room assignment process. That said, it is also one of our greatest challenges because students call with very distinct housing scenarios and desire a prediction on what type of housing they’ll be able to select. We know that, the more information students have, the better they are able to make decisions. This is why we posted a list showing all available apartment and residence hall spaces on our Web site two days before the room sign-up process began. Students were informed of this via a campus-wide e-mail. This Web site clearly listed that there were only nine single apartments available for the fall semester. In addition, updated information was available at the room sign-up process itself. Unfortunately, it is not possible for us to predict when a certain type of apartment will no longer be available. For this reason, if a student did not find a room to their liking, they were able to leave the sign-up process without any obligation.

Our goal is to try and provide every student a housing accommodation that they will enjoy. The exit survey we conducted during the process showed that most students felt that the Housing and Residence Life staff was helpful. I encourage students who did sign up for on-campus housing for the fall, but who want to try to improve their room for next year, to come to the main office in the Village by March 31 and put their name on our list for possible reassignment. Finally, thanks to all of you who have made the choice to be back on campus next year and to the professional and student staff who assisted with the sign-up process!
