Muny Theatre celebrates 89 years

This summer, “People Will Say We’re In Love” when we “Put on Our Sunday Clothes” and “We Go Together to Hernando’s Hideaway,” where “Any Dream Will Do” because “On My Own, I’m Flying.”

Confused?

That was actually a sneak peak for this summer’s lineup at St. Louis’ Muny Theatre, the largest and oldest outdoor musical theatre in America, located in Forest Park. It kicks off its 89th consecutive season in mid-June, starting with Oklahoma!, and followed by Grease, Hello Dolly!, Peter Pan, The Pajama Game, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolorc Dreamcoat and the Muny premiere of Les Mis?rables.

As a matter of fact, from now until June 13, season tickets are available for purchase by calling 361-1900 ext. 505 or visiting their Web site at www.muny.org. For $49 and up, season ticketholders will automatically have a reserved seat on a night of their choice during each of the seven musicals, plus “access to an on-site restaurant reserved for season ticket holders only,” said Laura Peters Reilly, director of marketing for the Muny. The price varies depending on what section you choose to sit in.

Season tickets aren’t the only way to get your fill of musical theater, though. Starting June 2, single tickets, which include admission to only one show, will be available, and the Muny even allows for 1,500 free seats for every show, filled on a first come, first served basis.

For those who are not aware, the Muny can seat more people than any theater on Broadway in New York City. As a matter of fact, “sometimes those who perform in the Muny go on to Broadway and are disappointed,” said Reilly. Oklahoma! runs from June 18-24; Grease, June 25-July 3; Hello Dolly!, from July 9-15; Peter Pan, from July 16-22; The Pajama Game, from July 23-29; Joseph and the Amazing Technicolorc Dreamcoat, July 30-Aug. 5; and Les Mis?rables, Aug. 6-15.

So, make your way to your computer, phone or the Muny box office located in Forest Park and brace yourself for some “Summer Lovin'” 89 years in the making.
