Grand Center offers relief from the lulls of summer

The lazy doldrums of summer just got a little less dull. This summer, when you find yourself toiling in the agony of summer boredom, never fear-salvation can be found just a short walk away.

Susan Wedemeyer, an event coordinator for the Grand Center, describes the organization’s summer events as “a wonderful experience-an experience of what is going on in the Grand Center in terms of the arts and entertainment.” The summer exhibition starts with the Grand Gallery Walk, which takes place on May 25 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. The walk will include 12 galleries and museums in the Grand Center Arts and Entertainment District, including Saint Louis University Museum of Art, Sheldon Art Galleries, Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, Schmidt Art Galleries and Baer Gallery at Centene Center.

“The Grand Center has gallery walks several times a year,” said Wedemeyer. She went on to describe the walk as an “intersection of art and life,” a phrase that also serves as a logo for the center. During the walk, complimentary trolleys and a horse-drawn carriage will be used to take the visitors around the historic district.

In addition to the art that will be shown through out the various galleries, Plein Air artists will be working outdoors throughout the district, as the walk will be “enlivened by artists on the streets,” said Wedemeyer.

In addition to the free art walk, the Grand Center will be hosting the Grand Outdoor/Summer Film Series starting on Aug. 11 and running through Sept. 1. Avid movie buffs can cozy up under the stars as the Grand Center collaborates with Cinema St. Louis to show such classics as The Goonies, Ghostbusters, Young Frankenstein and Pee Wee’s Big Adventure on the grass-covered lot just east of the Bruno David Art Gallery. The nights will include live music from local artists and various refreshments.

The final event of the 2007 Arts Initiative is titled Grand Opening: Dancing in the Street. The district’s day-long dancing festival will run on Sept. 29 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Three dance stages will be positioned in the middle of Grand Center, and an organized dance line will take over Grand Boulevard. The event will not only feature local dancers, but will include the world-renowned aerial and gymnastics team Project Bandaloop, a group so talented that the San Francisco Bay Guardian claims, “There is no more joyous, festive or entertaining show in town.” The aerobic sensations will perform two shows that evening at 5 and 8:30.

Wedemeyer said that Grand Center is interested in “getting closer to the Saint Louis University community as a whole,” saying that the organization is “offering more and more to the students, faculty and staff.” The activities that they will host for the St. Louis community this summer will do just that-bring a bit of culture, history and fun to the hot summer streets.
