The season has begun, and the feeling of possibility is spreading through campus faster than a box of doughnuts in Coach Majerus’ office. Basketball season is upon us.
For many students at Saint Louis University, the basketball season comes and goes without so much as a raised eyebrow, but times are changing. It’s time to go to a basketball game and see what the hype is all about.
SLU had more hype years ago under the endearing Charlie Spoonhour, and the team made three tournament appearances; after his departure, however, Brad Soderburg failed to build the same level of hype. Now, with the arrival of Rick Majerus, SLU is building enthusiasm and getting attention for its basketball program once more.
With a new coach, and indeed a soon-to-be completed arena, one might say that SLU basketball is entering a new Maj-era. We certainly think so.
The important thing for students to remember is that at a school with no football team, basketball and soccer are the most likely sports around which the student body can rally, and, baby, it’s basketball season now. Majerus, with his fame, has the opportunity to turn around a program that has been lacking in wins, but not talent. Students at SLU have the opportunity to witness the possible turn-around first hand.
Tickets for games are relatively cheap for students-only $10 per game-and once the arena is completed, transportation to the games will never again be a concern. The team, may even have a chance for the first time in nearly a decade to actually reach the NCAA tournament.
It seems to us, as it should to most students who, after all, have a vested interest in the school, that now is the time to support SLU athletics. Even if you’ve never supported or even attended a sporting event in the past, for the time being, SLU is your community. Supporting SLU athletics and attending a game or two-or more-is an entertaining way to support your community in this, the new Maj-era.
