Dear SGA: We need to talk

Dearest Student Government Association,

Is something wrong? You’ve been acting rather distant lately. Valentine’s Day came and went, and you never called. I thought about sending you some roses, maybe a box of chocolates or a few life-sized teddy bears. But then, I realized that these niceties would do no good. I reflected, and I realized something.

SGA . We need to talk.

We’ve been together for decades now, so I know when something’s bothering you. (And you’re not that difficult to read, dear; virtually all of your members came from the same ticket.) I know you’re about to go through some serious changes. New personalities will come to the fore, and former ones will fall away.

Yes, I know you’re going through a stressful time. But that gives you no right to ignore me. You’ve set up a fancy website, so I can find out more about you any time of day. But I crave personal attention. I want you to come out and talk to me. I want you to ask me how my day has been, what I like about Saint Louis University, what I would change and how you can help make our relationship better. I want your senators to knock on our door every week, to ask how they can help improve our campus.

Initially, SGA, I was attracted to your svelte build and muscular shape. (You looked especially nice after the renovation of the Simon Recreation Center.) But recently, love, you’ve been letting yourself go. No, it isn’t just the glasses. You’re getting lazy. I couldn’t even find the updated list of goals, the ones you so treasured during campaign time last year, on your website.

Frankly, SGA, you’re . Well, you’re a bit boring. At least, that’s what the neighbors are saying. Of course, I love you, anyway. And I’m hardly asking you to stir up trouble for the sake of nothing. But don’t you think there are serious issues that you could tackle? Your responsibilities with student funding and the relocation of ash-receptacles are nice, even necessary. But I’ve always had other plans in mind.

I want you to take me out somewhere after your meetings on Wednesday nights, somewhere nicer than Gries’ grease. Give us a decent place to eat at home, somewhere we can go any time without dressing up.

And please, SGA, can’t you do something about those mice and squirrels in our campus homes? It isn’t too much to ask to make sure the house is clean. Call someone to clean the mold off of the ceilings, and don’t make me ask you again to light a fire under that exterminator.

And while you’re at it, can’t you get me something nice, for once? All of our peer institutions have spent millions renovating their libraries in the last 10 years. And our library? Well, I’ve heard that it seats only a fraction of my population. I’d rather have a class library than more parking lots or carnival rides or West End real estate.

I’d like a steady relationship with you, SGA. That’s why you’re still around. You’re here to serve my needs. And though you are part of me, the second half of my heart-your members are my members-I want something better.

Before new faces alter you for good, consider my requests. No one can love you like I want to. Your legacy should include grander dreams than an ever-increasing activity fee and displaced ash trays.

You have made a difference. You can make a difference. Why don’t you?

XOXO
