Basketball player Kwamain Mitchell was readmitted to Saint Louis University on Jan. 6 following a suspension after he was found in violation of the student conduct code last fall.
The University issued the following statement:
“Kwamain Mitchell has been readmitted to Saint Louis University and is eligible to enroll in classes for the spring 2011 semester.
The decision to readmit Mitchell follows a meeting with the University this week. In considering readmission of a student to SLU, the University reviews the student’s total educational record, including academic standing and matters relating to student conduct, in making its decision.
Upon receiving clearance by the NCAA, Mitchell would be eligible to participate immediately and fully as a member of the SLU men’s basketball team.”
According to Assistant Sports Information Director Brian Kunderman, Mitchell must first enroll in classes for the spring semester in order to practice with the team. Mitchell must also receive permission from the NCAA to participate as a full player.
The University has commenced the process for Mitchell to be cleared by the NCAA. Kunderman said the time for Mitchell’s clearance is “indeterminate” and is solely up to the NCAA.
If Mitchell is cleared by the NCAA, he will decide whether or not he would like to participate on the team as a full time player. Kunderman said that if Mitchell chooses to redshirt, he will have two years of eligibility as a full time player. If he chooses to be play this spring, then he will have one and a half years of eligibility, Kunderman said.
Mitchell did not return messages from The University News.
The acceptance of former student and teammate Willie Reed to the University is still under review, according to Director of University Communications Clayton Berry. Reed, who met with administration on Jan. 6 to discuss his suspension, said he hopes the administration may reach a decision regarding his admission by Jan. 10. Reed said he hopes the administration will consider him “acceptable to be in SLU again.”
