Six organizations appealed for an increase of their budgets, five of which received at least some, if not all they asked for. A highly debated $6,000 was allocated to Rainbow Alliance for a renowned transsexual bisexual speaker, Julia Serano, whose influence Rainbow Alliance felt was imperative to educate and draw the attention of an LGBT-ignorant campus. The bill passed and the money allocated to Rainbow Alliance.
Other announcements at the meeting included a presentation by Mary Marshall of the Saint Louis University Museum of Art, who invited students to increase their presence and participation in both SLUMA and the historic Samuel Cupples House. She added that the “Saint Louis Magazine” has nominated SLU for “Favorite Art Destination” and that students can vote online to help SLU earn the title.
“Bottom line: I want this,” Marshall said.
The meeting concluded as a student representative of HAVEN, SLU’s Violence Prevention Response and Advocacy Center, called for students to speak louder against violence and abuse done to women as well as men on campus, pushing for an on-campus office to meet the needs of affected and concerned students.
