On August 18th at approximately 2:30 p.m. former Saint Louis University student and Billiken volleyball player Megan Boken was shot and killed in the Central West End near the intersection of Taylor and Maryland Ave.

According to police reports and witness statements, Boken had engaged in an altercation with an unidentified male suspect who was in the car with her. The man exited the vehicle and fired two shots which fatally wounded Boken. He fled the scene before police responded.

Boken was transported to Barnes Jewish Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call CrimeStoppers at 866-371-8477.

Boken, who had moved to the Chicago area after graduation, returned to St. Louis this weekend for annual SLU alumni volleyball game.

“We are shocked and saddened by this terrible and tragic loss,” a spokesperson for SLU said. “Megan was a truly outstanding student-athlete who excelled in the classroom and on the court. She exemplified the very best of what it means to be a Saint Louis University Billiken. Our focus right now is on providing as much support as we can for our students, and our thoughts and prayers are with Megan’s family and friends during this very difficult time.”

Boken played for the Billikens from 2007-10 on teams that won two A-10 regular-season titles (2008, 2009), captured the 2008 A-10 Championship crown and made two NCAA Championship appearances (2008, 2009).

She was a 2011 graduate of SLU’s John Cook School of Business, earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing. She earned a place on the A-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll for academic excellence and was a member of SLU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Boken was from Wheaton, Ill., where she was an All-State volleyball player at Wheaton St. Francis High School and a member of the Spartans’ 2004 and 2006 state championship teams.

“Megan was a vibrant young woman and a wonderful representative of Saint Louis University and Billiken athletics,” SLU athletic director Chris May said. “In addition to being a great student, she was an outstanding athlete and an important part of our championship volleyball teams. All the qualities we value in a Saint Louis student-athlete were reflected in Megan. She contributed as much in the classroom and in the community as she did on the court. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.”

Saint Louis Campus Ministry representatives and members of the University’s Student Health and Counseling Services staff have met with SLU student-athletes and are available for consultation.

Information on services for Boken are pending and will be announced to the SLU community when available.
