Men’s soccer ties rival

Men’s soccer ties rival

Men’s soccer moved to 1-1-2 after a 1-1 draw with Marquette on Sept. 10 at Hermann Stadium.

The Golden Eagles were just four minutes away from sealing the victory after taking a 1-0 lead, but sophomore forward Anthony Brown drew a foul inside the box to give SLU a chance to tie things up. Senior defender Max Karcher successfully put away the penalty kick to the goalkeeper’s right side to earn the point for the Billikens.

Neither team could find a game-winner in the twenty minutes of extra play, as both teams started to show signs of fatigue. SLU especially began to fade in extra time, showing the tired legs that may have been a consequence of last week’s extra-time game against Tulsa. The Billikens played the full 20 minutes of extra time against Tulsa, and will hope to avoid a third-straight overtime game in their next match.

Both offenses were pressing during the course of the match, with each team firing 11 shots. Marquette edged SLU on corner kicks, 5 to 4, respectively. Defensively, junior goalie Sascha Otte made four saves, a save count matched by the Marquette goalkeeper.

SLU had the clear advantage in the second half, outshooting Marquette 6-4, with one shot inches wide from the far post and another caroming off a post that proved to be the Golden Eagles’ best friend.

The Billikens travel to Denver on Sept. 15 for an 8 p.m. kickoff. The away game against Denver will be a tough one for the Billikens, considering that the Pioneers are ranked eighth in the nation and sit on a healthy 4-0-1 record entering the showdown against SLU.

The men return to face Louisville at Hermann Stadium on Sept. 20, where the new mascot will be revealed. The Billikens will be able to play at home again on Sept. 24 to take on VCU for their homecoming game. SLU will then begin a three game road trip, which will open with a trip to take on Wisconsin.
