Men’s swimming earns fifth place, McCoy surpasses 100-yard butterfly NCAA B Cutline

SLU Swimming and Diving wrapped up its season with the A-10 Conference Tournament. Several Billikens won individual and relay events at the tournament. The men’s team finished fifth out of eight teams, and the women’s team finished eighth.

On the first day, junior Ryan McCoy, sophomore Grant Gamroth, sophomore Isaiah Williams and senior Nick Jessee won the men’s 800-yard freestyle relay in a time of 6:32.42. That time also proved to be a new SLU school record. Also, SLU won points from the women’s 200-yard medley relay, the men’s 200-yard medley relay, the women’s one-meter diving and the women’s 800-yard freestyle relay.

On the second day, no Billikens won any events.

On the third day the Billikens also won no events. However, McCoy finished second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 47.05, good enough to pass the NCAA B Cutline.

Finally, on the last day junior Mina Glenesk finished the 1,650-yard freestyle in first place with a time of 16:46.21. Other points came from the women’s 200-yard backstroke, the men’s 100-yard freestyle, the men’s 200-yard breaststroke, the men’s 200-yard butterfly, the women’s 400-yard freestyle relay and the men’s 400-yard freestyle relay.

SLU will hope to build on these performances in the fall, when the 2017-2018 season begins. The men will attempt to climb up the standings further, and move into the top half of the standings. Meanwhile, the women have some work to do to leave the foot of the table.
