In the Dominican Republic,

John Carroll April 12, 2006
This is a reflection on my semester thus far in the Dominican Republic. What you'll find below are the thoughts that have been running through my mind since encountering the Dominican life and examining U.S. life from the perspective of a small, Caribbean island.

With a New Perspective

John Carroll April 12, 2006
Talk about seeing things from a new perspective: It was interesting, and a little frightening, to have done a lot of work on Saint Louis University's campus for United Students Against Sweatshops, promoting worker's rights agendas from a consumer responsibility perspective, and then to have dinner with the Warren Buffet of the Dominican Republic.

Convivir: Wake Up, We’re In It Together

Gina Meyer and Matthew Rysavy April 12, 2006
When you wake up in Paloma-a community of about a dozen adobe houses hidden in the desert of Coahuila, Mexico-you might have to go to the well for your water. No network of pipes and running water connects you to the rest of the world. There's little electricity to run a television or radio either, and there are no paved roads connecting your town to the others.

Going International, and in Print

ROB GARTLAND April 6, 2006
The great philosopher Dave Barry once wrote, in reference to his college days, ". I was so full of energy that I was going to not only END WORLD HUNGER, but also STOP WAR and ELIMINATE RACISM. Whereas today my life goals, to judge from the notes I leave myself, tend to be along the lines of BUY DETERGENT.

Socialism and Catholicism: Compatible at SLU?

Kamil Kozlowski April 6, 2006
We welcome last week's vote by the Student Government Association to grant a charter to the Students for Social Equality (SSE) at Saint Louis University. It is a measure of the support and interest our organization has evoked among SLU students for a discussion of socialist positions on such questions as the war in Iraq, the decay of American democracy and the unprecedented level of social inequality in the United States.

Exercising Spiritually on the WWW

Ronald Modras Ph.D. April 6, 2006
Imagine yourself alone in your room all day with nothing to do but pray, daydream and think about your life. The only person you saw was Ignatius Loyola, who brought you your meals, gave you some gospel stories to pray over and asked you to confront your relationship with God.

The Whole City in Our Hands

Matthew Lehner Kate Kovarik March 30, 2006
St. Louis-the Gateway to the West, home to the 1904 World's Fair and a place where I am gradually rediscovering my ancestors' history. This is the city that my great-grandparents, grandparents and my mom have all grown up in. And now, I am gradually discovering what makes this city great.

Civil About Gay Union

Matthew Hyde March 30, 2006
There is nothing mentally, physically or spiritually disordered about homosexual people and homosexual couples. That being established, gay marriage is at the forefront of my mind when I think about modern civil rights. Why? As a homosexual male, this issue directly affects my life and my potential to have a legal family.

Yeah, He’s Single. So What?

Andrew Emmerich March 30, 2006
Oh for pity's sake, just go meet someone! How hard could it possibly be? You're single, you're in college and you have average looks--surely you can find someone. It sounds so easy, doesn't it? It's such a perfectly simplistic idea. Finding someone to date is not, unfortunately, the simplest task at the university level.

Real Men of ______________

ROB GARTLAND March 23, 2006
Seeing as I'm essentially a self-proclaimed wiener, I look upon the faces of classic tough guys as if they were gods. Names like John Wayne, Samuel L. Jackson, Janet Reno and Wolverine come to mind. These were men who never took guff, men who looked into the face of certain danger and, after taking a puff of a cigar and drinking several gallons of pure rubbing alcohol, said, "Hey . nope.

A Place of Your Own

KATIE LEWIS March 23, 2006
I've been corrupted by Corporate America ... and I think I like it. I know, I know, I jumped on the Starbucks bandwagon pretty late in life-our society's caffeinated six-year-olds would shake their chubby forefingers at me and pull out a pie chart from their mini-briefcases to show that I'm part of the 2 percent who didn't discover coffee pre-junior high.

Thoughts, Time, Travels

Jared Vandergriff March 23, 2006
When I saw my dad's old passport for the first time, I was in seventh grade. The picture baffled me. Though the name on the passport read "Robert J. Vandergriff," it was obvious that some sort of slow yet substantial metamorphosis had occurred since the taking of the picture.
