Fireworks fund fun, not fundamentals

Editorial Board October 2, 2008
Saint Louis University's Homecoming celebration included a spectacular tradition: fireworks, beautiful and impressive. Their proud, booming explosions echoed for miles against city buildings and served as an excellent celebration of the Billiken's 100-year anniversary.

VP candidates come to life in St. Louis

Editorial Board September 25, 2008
On Thursday, Oct. 2, Washington University in St. Louis will have special company: They will host a debate between vice presidential cadidates Sen. Joe Biden and Gov. Sarah Palin. Set to fill a role a proverbial heartbeat away from the presidency, Biden and Palin will be a heartbeat away from SLU, just a few miles west on Lindell Boulevard.

Calling all “Hoolikens” for Homecoming

Editorial Board September 25, 2008
Ladies and Gentlemen of Saint Louis University: Welcome to Homecoming week. SLU's version of this celebration of community started Monday with a "Birthday Bash" for the 100-year-anniversary of the Billiken mascot and will finish on Saturday with the big soccer game in Robert R.

Aimless housing policy needs master plan

Editorial Board September 18, 2008
Imagine building an addition to your house. The only resources you have are a few pictures of other people's construction projects, a brand-new foreman and the conviction that the project will be worth your while. You have no blueprints, no space and no funding.

“Be a Billiken” brands SLU with pride

Editorial Board September 18, 2008
Marketing is all about image. When a university markets itself to future students, it sells them an ideal college experience, for as much as a six-figure fee. With that in mind, consider these quotes from a promotional video for Saint Louis University's new "Be a Billiken" marketing campaign.

Dean arrives, students absent

Editorial Board September 11, 2008
Howard Dean-Democratic National Committee chairman, 2004 presidential hopeful and source of the infamous "Dean Scream"-was here at Saint Louis University, behind Griesedieck Complex on Saturday, Sept. 6. The 100 (or so) St. Louisians who showed up at that time and place understood the importance of Dean's visit.

The Sept. 11 generation

Editorial Board September 11, 2008
September, 2001: Today's Saint Louis University undergraduates had just brushed the cusp of adolescence. We were 11, 12, 13 and14 years old. We loitered in middle schools and high schools, passing through lunch lines and gym classes and school dances on our way to the grown-up world.

SLU Greeks exceed expectations

Editorial Board September 4, 2008
For better or for worse, most of our minds jump to a few stereotypes when we think about Greek life at college. These images may be mild (well manicured girls lounging on well manicured lawns grooming their poodles; buff young hunks with gleaming teeth leisurely tossing footballs) or wild (sleek packs of women cat-fighting over hair straighteners; tribes of blubbering drunks swinging by bed sheets from the balconies of dilapidated houses).

Communication is key in student government

Editorial Board September 4, 2008
This Wednesday, Sept. 3, the Student Government Association met for the first time. Its members have an ambitious platform and, though nothing of substance happened this week (absences due to Greek recruitment events prevented the group from reaching the quorum required for voting), the future looks promising for this year's Senate and its ambitious agenda.

News mentor banned in body, not spirit

Editorial Board August 28, 2008
This summer, The University News' longtime adviser and mentor Avis Meyer, Ph.D., was banned from the student newsroom by the administration after more than 30 years of service. If he tries to reenter, he could face any number of serious punishments. University administrators' official explanation for this action: Since a new, full-time adviser was hired last year, Meyer's contribution to the paper contradicts our current adviser, creating a confusing and stressful environment for student journalists.

Home, safe home

Editorial Board August 28, 2008
Whether the advice came from Granny, a roommate or a passing Department of Public Safety officer, each of us has been warned not to walk alone on campus at night. We receive handy-if-startling e-mail crime updates. And, we've all probably assumed, if even for a second, that theft or mugging will never happen to us.
