Unlocking campus safety

Editorial Board February 1, 2008
A knock on the door and a note slipped under the jamb-That's the notice that University employees gave to Marchetti East, the Village and Language House residents before changing the locks on all apartment doors this week. With little fuss and less explanation, the Department of Housing and Residence Life made sure that more than 780 Saint Louis University students-approximately 10 percent of the undergraduate population-queued up and shuffled about with new locks and new keys.

Endorsements: McCain, Obama

Editorial Board February 1, 2008
Super Tuesday, that annual smorgasbord of caucus and primary-based political drama, is just around the corner. This Tuesday, Feb. 5, Missouri and 23 other states will hold elections to nominate Democratic and Republican Party delegates, who will ultimately select candidates for the presidential election in November.

Tempest in a universi-teapot

Editorial Board January 25, 2008
A hotter-than-Hades issue has just propelled Saint Louis University into national news: At a political rally last weekend, SLU Basketball Coach Rick Majerus stated that he supported stem-cell research and abortion rights. Now, Archbishop Raymond Burke is demanding that the University discipline its wayward coach for his disobedient comments.

The high cost of $LU

Editorial Board January 25, 2008
Next academic year, Saint Louis University will set a record: For the first time, tuition will break the $30,000 ceiling. After another 6 percent increase, officially announced on Jan. 9, 2008, the total for the 2008-09 year-sans room, board and fees-will top out at $30,330.

Town hall meeting near failure

Editorial Board December 7, 2007
Town hall meetings have a specific purpose to allow those in power to hear those who wish to speak, and the idea of such meetings has not changed much today. Tuesday's student-administrater town hall meeting at Saint Louis University failed to live up to what the forum can be and was not a successful display of a genuine and traditional open question-and-answer session.

Permanent 24-hour study space, please

Editorial Board December 7, 2007
Finals are upon us. Students are frenzied. Frantic studying is being done at all hours; it is a staple in the college student's educational diet. Finals, however, are not the only time in a semester that a student wishes to study at what those outside the university community might consider to be odd hours.

Highway 40 shut down

Editorial Board November 30, 2007
This holiday traveling season may go smoothly, with no more than the predictable traffic back-ups and flight delays, but for residents of the St. Louis area, the largest shock will come after the holidays, when a section of Highway 40 is shut down. Students at Saint Louis University will certainly not be exempt from the trials of having a major traffic artery shut down for two years, and will be forced to alter traveling habits-perhaps for the benefit of all.

Posing questions

Editorial Board November 16, 2007
Muriel Gallo-Chasanoff, a student at Grinnell College in Iowa, was, on Nov. 6, told to ask Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton a scripted question at a live debate. Sadly, but not without remorse, the student did indeed ask the pre-formed question.

STDs in STL

Editorial Board November 16, 2007
Certainly the phrase "sex sells" has been around for many years, but in light of St. Louis recently being named the No. 1 city in the country for sexually transmitted disease rates, perhaps sex is being sold a bit too much. The recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that three STDs (gonorrhea, Chlamydia and syphilis) had increased in the number of reported cases for the second consecutive year.

Senseless civility code

Editorial Board November 9, 2007
The diversity among professorial personalities dictates that both students and teachers will not always get along. However, creating a university-wide "civility code" is over-reaching and rather insulting-to everyone. Students are aware, or should be if they have made it to the collegiate level in their educational careers, of the basic manners and behaviors that are expected of them in a classroom.

Writers’ compensation

Editorial Board November 9, 2007
The Writers' Guild of America is on strike. Rather than scream at TV screens in unabashed outrage, we fully support the scriptwriters in their quest for just monetary recognition for their work that they are not currently receiving. This is not to say that the Hollywood writers are near starvation, but rather that if a writer creates a genuine piece of individual and unique work, that writer should be recognized-in full-for that work.

A new Maj-era

Editorial Board November 2, 2007
The season has begun, and the feeling of possibility is spreading through campus faster than a box of doughnuts in Coach Majerus' office. Basketball season is upon us. For many students at Saint Louis University, the basketball season comes and goes without so much as a raised eyebrow, but times are changing.
