New building names irk students

Drew Thomas and Kevin Grillot September 24, 2009
It looks like the cannon ball finally killed Loyola-or at least his name. The Loyola Center for Campus Ministry has been changed to the Eckelkamp Center for Campus Ministry. While we mean no disrespect to [L.B. and Bonnie] Eckelkamp, we still find the choice to rename the Loyola Center appalling.

Theology professor grateful to Archbishop

Kenneth L. Parker September 10, 2009
In the summer of 2008, after the abrupt removal of Archbishop Burke from his role as the archbishop of Saint Louis, I was asked by The University News to write a commentary reflecting on Burke's time as head of our local church and what we need in the next archbishop.

SLU parent appalled by trash maintenance

Susan Steck Fleming September 10, 2009
As a parent of a freshman, I realize that not everything about dorm life will be perfect in the first few weeks. Yet as I picked up my son from Reinert on Saturday evening, I was struck by the overflowing trashcans outside of the dorm. All three were filled to the brim and overflowing.

First athletic reception proves unsuccessful

Vance Erese September 3, 2009
Pure chaos erupted this past weekend at the SLU Women's Volleyball match against the number one ranked team, Penn State. No, I am not talking about the game itself. I am recalling the pre-match reception hosted by SLU's athletic department. While the food and drink line went smoothly, the distribution of the free T-shirts to the first 500 students was a complete disaster.

Response to ‘SLU unprepared for rises in international students’

Martha King and Jonathan King September 3, 2009
As foreign-language instructors at SLU, last week's report on the struggles of international students left us appalled at the failure of the administration to understand the fundamental nature either of international study or of second-language acquisition in general.

Int’l Services director responds to ‘SLU unprepared for rises in international students’

Bert Berry September 3, 2009
As an international educator with 25 years of experience in the field, I am grateful for the interest The University News showed in the needs of the international students at Saint Louis University in your last issue. And while I agree that these students require different types of help and support from their U.

Response to ‘Haitian tradition insulted by freshmen guest speaker’

John W. Sanders September 3, 2009
I wish people wouldn't use the word "intolerant" as an insult. If you insist that tolerance is a virtue, you cannot object when others are intolerant. In fact, you cannot object to anything. To do so would constitute intolerance on your part, thus making you a hypocrite.

All of Us leaders respond

Julianna Heck and Thomas Bloom April 30, 2009
Over the last couple of weeks, Rainbow Alliance's straight ally-led initiative, the All of Us Campaign, has been a subject of controversy and discussion around Saint Louis University's campus. The last edition of The University News featured several commentaries expressing a gamut of emotions over the temporary hold put on the All of Us Campaign by SLU administrators.

Promoting Catholic doctrine

James Hitchcock and Warren Tre April 30, 2009
Some of last week's letters show an inability or unwillingness to understand that those who demand "gay rights," though they preach tolerance, are intolerant of the core beliefs of the Catholic Church and most other Christians, Jews and Muslims, particularly African and African-American Christians.

Shutting down All of Us

Mike Reddy April 23, 2009
Time after time, Saint Louis University's administration has ignored and disregarded the needs of its students under the guise of upholding the Jesuit ideals of our University. In a zealous attempt to appease donors and the upper tiers of the administration, SLU has taken a stance of intolerance directed toward anything that may upset or anger our predominantly traditional-minded sources of endowment.

Men and Women for others

Lauren Trout April 23, 2009
In my four years here, I have seen Saint Louis University's upper echelons conveniently choose which values to uphold while waving the banner of "men and women for others." Yet, as a student, my actions, words and ideas have been repressed without answers.

Defending human rights

Katie Langley April 23, 2009
I want to express how hurt, appalled and shocked I am in the administration's decision to stop Rainbow Alliance's All of Us Campaign. This is not just about gay rights, it is about HUMAN rights. How can we call ourselves "Men and Women for Others" when we turn our heads from the inequalities here on our own campus, especially within the GLBT community? The All of Us Campaign is based on love and inclusiveness.
