Chem Club congrats

Sam Howard October 12, 2007
The American Chemical Society Student Affiliates chapter (Chemistry Club) at SLU has been selected to receive an Outstanding Award for its activities conducted during the 2006-2007 academic year. This is the highest award given to chapters by the ACS. This year, only 28 chapters nationwide were awarded the Outstanding Award.

Defending SAB efforts

Kristopher Priemer October 5, 2007
Last week there was a premature critique of Homecoming. As the VP of Public Relations for the Student Activities Board, I take full offense to this article written about the lack of enthusiasm from SAB. I, along with the Street Team, spent many long hours working hard to promote the events for Homecoming:

Success at Homecoming

Ainsley Onstott Janelle Densb October 5, 2007
While we?believe that The University News ought to objectively comment about anything it sees fit, and editorials are an expression of opinion, we were troubled by the inaccuracies included in this editorial. For instance, the author indicated that the week's activities should have been included in more than just the SGA mailer.

Intelligent design

Gerardo R. Camilo October 5, 2007
I was saddened to see Dr. Dasso's letter in The UNews. The implications of evolutionary theory to the treatment of diseases in childhood are many. For example, the American Academy of Pediatrics recently announced that pediatricians should stop prescribing antibiotics to treat common earaches due to the evolution of resistant strains of bacteria.

Sit, speak, stand for peace

Rebecca Gorley October 5, 2007
Like a wet dog, I decided to shake. I decided to shake off complacency with a move that looked like a peace, love and respect rally at the clock-tower steps. Earlier this week, I was reading in my apartment, and a Students for Life (Students for Life at Saint Louis University "is dedicated to protecting each and every human life from the moment of conception") flier advertising Respect Life Week 2007 rested on the coffee table beside me.

Another side to ‘Jena Six’

Alisha Kirby September 28, 2007
There are two sides to every story. The University News presents only one side of the controversial "Jena Six" issue in their Sept. 21 article and editorial. Many significant details of the incidents occurring in Jena, La. are absent from The University News' coverage of the story.

Intelligent design

Joseph Dasso September 28, 2007
Dr. Ken Miller, who spoke at SLU recently, upheld a theistic view of Darwinian evolution and attacked intelligent design theory as being unscientific. Dr. Miller did not adequately discuss the methodological naturalism underlying how evolution is taught and failed to address William Dembski's argument for the scientific basis for ID in Dembski's book, The Design Inference.

Pondering peace; choosing justice

Rebecca Gorley September 21, 2007
Dear Saint Louis University, Thank you for choosing to bring Jane Elliot to speak Thursday, Sept. 20, 2007 on this campus. Speaking crucial and compelling words about the unmistakable dissonance that pervades American society, she issued a challenge to make the choice to step out of comfort and complacency and start to make genuine choices to live actively aware and peacefully, with love and acceptance for one another.

Thanking CSO leaders

Sam Howard September 21, 2007
Just to ensure that all of these PHENOMENAL people get in the paper, I want to THANK everyone who participated in the first-ever CSO Student Leader Retreat this past weekend-Friday, Sept. 14-Saturday, Sept. 15. This was a weekend where CSO Student Leaders were CONNECTED to resources available to them at SLU, administrators who are important to their success, to the Student Government Association and most importantly, to one another.

Students stand up for peace

Jim Allen September 21, 2007
While the debate over the war in Iraq continues and Congress prepares to vote on another multibillion dollar supplement, peace activists in St. Louis organized a five-day 24-hour vigil outside of Senator Claire McCaskill's office in the Delmar Loop . Last night, I had the opportunity to join in that vigil along with a group of Saint Louis University students.

Fielding complaints

Kevin Crookshank September 21, 2007
Intramural soccer on the field at Laclede and Vandeventer is a good experience. We have lights to play under, fences to corral loose balls, goals with nets and wheels for easy movement, referees, and even a lined field. I'm very thankful for all these amenities.

Adolescence lost response

Ashley Moses September 14, 2007
As a student who entered college at age 15, I would like to comment on some of the statements made in the article "Adolescence lost" that appeared in the editorials section of The University News (Sept. 7, 2007). To start off with, the article claims that students entering college at such a young age are "blatantly out-of-place.
