Tuesday Forecast: 100 percent Chance of Tsunami!

PETER HAMEL February 1, 2008
America's next president could be nominated by his or her party by Tsunami Tuesday. Tsunami Tuesday, more commonly known as Super Tuesday, is, in fact, this Tuesday, Feb. 5. It is incredibly important, because that's when 24 states will hold their primaries or caucuses for one or both political parties.

Tuition Inquiry: Getting what you pay for

Lew Griffith January 25, 2008
The grinding of teeth, the exasperated sighs and the rebudgeting of checkbooks are in full force after the release of the President's January Message. The message is a mass e-mail from Father lawrence Biondi, S.J., detailing the upcoming budget and educational improvements for Saint Louis University.

Misunderstanding the Church

Greg Cooper January 25, 2008
Reading John Witt's article "SLU powerbrokers ignore Catholic beliefs" (The University News, Dec. 7), it is obvious that the author himself "fundamentally misunder-stands" Catholic teaching. Objecting to a plan to open a Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Resource Center on campus, Witt claims that such a center would be contrary to Catholic teaching.

Writing as a privilege, not as a right

Allison Reilly January 25, 2008
They intrigued me, those blank pages of a mysterious red notebook in our "Junk Room" almost four years ago. I just knew as I browsed through those blank pages and allowed my imagination to soar that a story was there waiting for extraction through the lines.

Commuter lounge no myth

Brian Hackworth Jr. January 25, 2008
Are you a commuter looking for a place to study or just hang out and meet new people? Try the Commuter Lounge! Greetings fellow commuters and welcome back to the Spring 2008 semester! Ashes to ashes: A planet’s progress

George Caputa January 25, 2008
Over the break, I was in a reading frenzy. With so many books to read and only a month of free time, friends would often see me up at my favorite café, sitting at the end of the counter with a mug of coffee to my lips, a cigarette in hand and my nose in a book.

Tempest in a universi-teapot

Editorial Board January 25, 2008
A hotter-than-Hades issue has just propelled Saint Louis University into national news: At a political rally last weekend, SLU Basketball Coach Rick Majerus stated that he supported stem-cell research and abortion rights. Now, Archbishop Raymond Burke is demanding that the University discipline its wayward coach for his disobedient comments.

The high cost of $LU

Editorial Board January 25, 2008
Next academic year, Saint Louis University will set a record: For the first time, tuition will break the $30,000 ceiling. After another 6 percent increase, officially announced on Jan. 9, 2008, the total for the 2008-09 year-sans room, board and fees-will top out at $30,330.

Show me progress

Pete K. Rahn January 25, 2008
I'd like to sincerely thank the people of St. Louis for their cooperation during the recent closing of Interstate 64 from Ballas Road to Interstate 170. We appreciate all they have done to use alternate routes, adjust their work schedules, work from home, carpool and use mass transit to make the closing go as smoothly as it has.

Recapping for the GOP

Brett Kostrzewski January 25, 2008
The race for the GOP nomination has become more unpredictable and fickle than anyone could have guessed. From Rudy Giuliani to Mike Huckabee, from Mitt Romney to John McCain, there is no such thing as a frontrunner in this contest. Here's a quick recap. In the several months leading up to the elections, Giuliani was a hands-down favorite, leading by double digits in the polls.

Catholicism used incorrectly

George Doonan Martin January 25, 2008
I want to point out several inconsistencies in last week's "SLU powerbrokers ignore Catholic Beliefs" commentary (Dec. 7, 2007). First, while the author clearly relates the Catholic Church's condemnation of homosexual acts, he fails to provide evidence suggesting that the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender resource center would encourage these acts.

Town hall meeting near failure

Editorial Board December 7, 2007
Town hall meetings have a specific purpose to allow those in power to hear those who wish to speak, and the idea of such meetings has not changed much today. Tuesday's student-administrater town hall meeting at Saint Louis University failed to live up to what the forum can be and was not a successful display of a genuine and traditional open question-and-answer session.
