Alum Questions Funding

Nick Selm March 23, 2007
To the Editor: I recently heard a piece on NPR regarding SLU's attempts to gain public money for the new arena. In light of the Masons (our neighbors on Lindell) challenging this funding in court, the NPR article stated that SLU claimed to not be a Catholic university.

Dissent Deserves Response

Patrick Ishmael March 23, 2007
On Tuesday, Pax Christi held a "die-in" in protest of the Iraq War. I organized the independent and unaffiliated counter-protest. To give you some background, the organization's "die-in" participants lay out across the school's grounds-holding the names of fallen Americans and Iraqis during the University lunch hour-as a representation of those who have died in the Iraq War and as a symbol for why U.

Spring Break-Ins

Editorial Board March 23, 2007
What do DeMattias Hall, Griesedieck Hall, Grand Forest Apartments and the Village Apartments have in common, other than housing students of Saint Louis University? All have been broken into-and the apartments, burglarized-during the 2006-07 academic year.

Fresh Gatherings Offers Dining Alternative

Jim Jeske March 23, 2007
To the Editor: I am writing as a reader, Alumus (1967) and a Vegan. I must thank James Ahearn for his views on Terra Ve and his interest in a space where one can get a healthy and comfortable dining experience. I personally feel that should be the issue (a healthy dining experience) and not that Terra Ve is a Vegetarian restaurant.

Curbing Intellectual Freedom?

Amy Kaufman March 23, 2007
This Tuesday I joined several students in handing out information about the College Republicans' Support the Troops supply drive. In addition to these pamphlets, we also handed out yellow ribbons to students who wanted to show their support for the American soldiers overseas.

Marching to the Beat of a Different Drummer

Chris Olliges March 23, 2007
On Tuesday, Mar. 20, 2007, a group of students conducted a "die-in" in remembrance of the U.S. soldiers and Iraqi people killed in Iraq. The die-in, organized by Pax Christi, had 84 participants who symbolically died on Saint Louis University's Quad-for 40 minutes: 10 minutes for each year of the war.

Solemn Oaths: The Place of Profanity in Print Media

Bob Blaskiewicz March 23, 2007
On a college campus, people should strive to be rational, or at least to maintain a nodding acquaintance with reason. This is why I read Kristian Marlow's comments about J.P. Murray's use of the word "f---" with some dismay. Superstition and reason are by definition incompatible, and I suspect that the most pervasive superstition perpetuated by otherwise reasonable people is an aversion to swearing.

Dangerous Peace: Does the Selfishness of the Anti-war Movement Undermine Justice?

Shawn McCarthy March 23, 2007
The anti-war left and their minions have sunk to a new low in their hypocrisy and the disgrace they are bringing to this nation and the soldiers who fight to keep them safe. The last week there were a number of attacks on the morale and the mission of American troops, and most attacks were under the guise of "supporting" the troops.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T for Fr. Biondi

Tim Wright March 23, 2007
Monday night, I had the opportunity to sit in on a town hall meeting here at Saint Louis University. Present was a panel consisting of SLU President Fr. Biondi, S.J., and nearly all the deans and vice presidents, as well as a few other administrators. At the most, there were perhaps 160 students, though considerably fewer than that remained the entire time.

Student Sympathizes with Soldier

Kevin Grillot March 23, 2007
To the Editor: As I peruse the usual University News, I find myself in discontent to the world that we live in, specifically the feelings of this country. Fitting the stereotypical norm of a college student, I believe in freedom of speech and expressing such matters.

Anyone But a Soldier: Patriotism vs. Pop Music

Shawn McCarthy March 2, 2007
As a soldier with traditional values, I know that punk rock shows are not the friendliest places for me. I expect to have to tolerate the bands occasionally stomping on what I believe in; after all, they gotta do what the kids think is cool. I do not expect, however, to be attacked for being a soldier and disagreeing with the political statements made on stage, which is exactly what happened at Pop's on Feb.

A Student Voice

Editorial Board March 2, 2007
During this week's Student Government Association meeting, International Student Federation senator Shahida Flores expressed her opinion: She claimed that The University News has not been accurately reflecting the voice of Saint Louis University students. We appreciate this criticism.
