Caring for Kirkwood, Northern Illinois

Editorial Board February 22, 2008
Two weeks ago, on Feb. 7, six people were killed and two were wounded in Kirkwood, Mo., when a resident opened fire during a city council meeting. Last week, on Feb. 14, Valentine's Day, six people were killed and 16 were wounded at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill.

Smoking debate ignites controversy

Travis Brimhall February 22, 2008
At the referendum debates on Tuesday night, Carly Caminiti and Emily Meyers mindlessly regurgitated their party line, while a pair of self-righteous pseudo-intellectuals (this writer included) scrambled to get a coherent thought together in response. No one could care less.

VP backs ban

Carly Caminiti February 22, 2008
This year, we are lucky to have the opportunity to vote on an extremely important public health issue on the SGA ballot: second-hand smoke exposure on campus. As such, we must act in the best interest of the well being of our campus and work to protect the health of everyone.

Revisiting the smoking issue

Joe Piehl February 22, 2008
As election day approaches our campus, I am a non-smoker concerned about the referendum to further limit smoking on campus. Even though DPS has stated that smoking in the parking garages and on sidewalks will be safe for smokers, I do not think people will walk to the edge of campus to smoke.

Former senator advocates fee

David Kilper February 22, 2008
As a former SLU undergraduate who campaigned in favor of the last student activity fee increase, I wish to counter Chris Wintrode's misleading commentary. ("Show SGA the money," Feb. 15). His attempt at a law-school style hypothetical distorts the truth about the current proposal.

Memories and monologues

Editorial Board February 15, 2008
Until Last Week, Saint Louis University students directing "A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant, and a Prayer"-a theater piece produced by members of Una, SLU's feminist organization-had little to worry about. They had booked Tegeler Hall for tonight and Saturday, Feb.

Dear SGA: We need to talk

Editorial Board February 15, 2008
Dearest Student Government Association, Is something wrong? You've been acting rather distant lately. Valentine's Day came and went, and you never called. I thought about sending you some roses, maybe a box of chocolates or a few life-sized teddy bears. But then, I realized that these niceties would do no good.

Senior tackles smoking situation

Sean MacLennan February 15, 2008
There is a constant theme running through American campuses, and society in general, of over-legislation, especially legislating things like common courtesy. We see that with the proposed ban on smoking. I admit, it's a little rude to light up in the middle of a tight crowd (though those are actually pretty rare on campus), but that does not mean that smoking should be banned.

Faculty Senate responds

defaultuser February 15, 2008
The editorial, "Living Up to Leadership," published in the Feb. 8 issue of The University News, posed the question ".can an administration that the faculty senate has called "fear-mongering" be truly effective?" This attribution was made without reference to either an official Senate document or a statement by a Senate officer.

Show SGA the money

Chris Wintrode February 15, 2008
Our student Government Association needs a new theme song, and I have a good suggestion. Remember Donald Trump's "Apprentice" theme? The lyrics begin, "Money, Money, Money, Money . Money!" The O'Jays, singing "For the Love of the Money," might have had our student government in mind when they were singing this song back in the '70s.

SLU women silenced, again

John Nolan February 15, 2008
Saint Louis University's women's rights group Una planned to hold a show today called "A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant, and a Prayer." The show was to be presented tonight at 7 p.m. in Tegeler Hall. The Department of Student Life and Dean of Students Scott Smith informed Una that it was not allowed to show the piece on SLU's campus.

Super Tuesday, delegates, choices

Lew Griffith February 15, 2008
Super Tuesday has come and gone, with a topsy-turvy week of delegate-snatching by all candidates. Much to John McCain's surprise and delight, his closest combatant for the Republican nomination, Mitt Romney, withdrew so as to strengthen the party. Romney withdrew because he wants the GOP to build a steadfast reputation for the coming onslaught of the Democratic nominee come this fall.
