Ben Harper and The Innocent Criminals return to the St. Louis area this Saturday at the American Theater. This was quite a change, since the band used to call side stages at summer music festivals home. Last spring, Ben Harper stopped by Mississippi Nights to play to the smaller club scene, his specialty. After spending part of his summer touring with The Dave Matthews Band, the band returns to smaller venues where Ben and company are at their best.
The band is currently touring with their fourth and newest album, Burn To Shine. Harper’s fame has traveled by word of mouth from loving fans everywhere. His success had landed him a hit single in “Steal My Kisses,” despite his continuing efforts to stay out of the mainstream.
“Sometimes I think to talk too much about music almost cheapens it,” says Ben Harper.
For the guy who only needs a guitar to be at home, his philosophy of music fits perfectly. In Harper’s eyes, music exists as a pure art form which deserves respect.
When Harper and his Innocent Criminals take the stage, it feels as if they are playing by candlelight in your living room. Despite the increasing size of their shows, the band manages to maintain a personal side. Harper’s creative and soulful lyrics and mastery of the acoustic and electric guitar will undoubtedly earn him a seat next to music greats. Why not be a part of his journey here?
The show begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are still available, but the show is general admission, so make sure to arrive early.
