Marchetti residents are getting used to riding the elevators with men in hard hats and stacks of sliding doors.
Construction being completed in the towers is part of the multi-million Project SLU2000 project.
According to Jim McGuirk, superintendent for construction, renovation and construction began on the top floor of Marchetti East on Oct. 2.
Work is being done on a floor-by-floor basis. It takes approximately four days to complete a floor. Lighting in the rooms is replaced first and then the windows and sliding doors are replaced.
The installation of the windows and sliding doors was delayed because they had to be custom made and fabricated.
In addition to the work being done inside the apartments, a new electrical service is being added to the two towers. There are also external improvements planned.
“We plan on working through the break,” said McGuirk. “We are projecting to be finished in mid-February.”
Prior to starting construction, Marchetti residents were invited to an informational meeting. Denise Taylor, assistant vice president for facilities planning, thought the meetings were poorly attended.
“We would be more than willing to have another meeting with the students, if there are any problems,” Taylor said.
She added that complaints have been minimal.
“The students have been very cooperative,” Taylor said. “It’s going to be disruptive, but there was no other way to go about doing it.”
Tammy Nassar lives on the 10th floor, one of the first floors completed.
“I think it’s great that we now have nicer windows,” Nassar said. “The overall attitude of the workers could have been better.”
Mike Luebbers is also a resident of Marchetti East. “It’s really nice now that it’s finished,” Luebbers said.”I wish they could have found a better way to go about doing it.”
