The John and Ann MacLennan Gallery of Asian Art features a new exhibit starting Nov. 10.

“Things Move” is a display of the works of Chicago-based artist Jeff Carter. He is the last in the series of artists to collaborate with the gallery’s permanent collection.

Carter incorporates both traditional and experimental materials in his art. He also explores the metaphorical relationship of physical movement and his own movement between people, places and culture.

According to Nanette Boileau Curator of the MacLennan Gallery, two pieces of Carter’s art will be displayed.

“Untitled” is a mover’s dolly made entirely of clear Plexiglas. “Silk Road” is a loop of red silk thread that slowly and continually moves through the gallery. A motorized network of pulleys guides the thread along the outer edges of the space.

Carter said that his goal for “Things Move” was to integrate sculpture with the objects in the gallery as thoroughly as possible, occupying and activating the space with a minimum of physical presence.

An opening reception will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10. The reception is open to the public.

The exhibition runs from Nov. 10 to Dec. 22. The gallery is located in the Busch Memorial Center. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
