Build 15 houses in 15 days? It might sound like an impossible feat, but with the help of volunteers from all over the city, the St. Louis Chapter of Habitat for Humanity plans to make a reality.
The “Habitat for Humanity Blitz” will take place from April 28 through May 12.
Habitat for Humanity is hoping to have 200 volunteers each day, for its first citywide project of this magnitude.
Volunteers will help with all aspects of the house construction, from hammering floorboards to hanging drywall.
About 40 people from the university have already signed up through the Saint Louis University Community Outreach Center, but there are still openings for students who wish to get involved.
“We are hoping to get as many SLU volunteers over there as possible,” said Bernie Schaefer, director of the Community Outreach Center. He added that there is no construction experience necessary and that people will be on site to direct volunteers wherever they are needed.
The houses are being built in the Hamilton Heights area, the same neighborhood where volunteers from the Community Outreach Center built a Habitat for Humanity home earlier in the school year.
“We want to capture the energy and momentum of the building project that many helped out with last fall,” Schaefer said.
Students who wish to volunteer for the project must call the Community Outreach Center at 977-3881 to sign up.
Volunteer openings will be held on April 30 and May 3, 4, 7, 9 and 10.
Groups of students can sign up together but should call the office as soon as possible to make the necessary arrangements.
