Six Saint Louis University students have spent an entire semester trying to get their acts together, and this weekend you can watch them spill it onstage.
The Saint Louis University theater department will present six student-directed one act plays tonight tonight, tomorrow night and Saturday in the studio theatre in the lower level of Xavier Hall.
The one acts “Run the gammit from light comedy to heavy drama each evening” said John Lamb of the Saint Louis University Theater department. The plays are part of an upper division theater class offered each. This year’s class has been taught by Tom Martin, who directed Tennessee William’s The Glass Menagerie at SLU this fall.
Lee Emery is a senior at SLU and is directing The Contestant which he wrote with C.C. Jones. “It confronts the issues surrounding war–the repercussions of killing.”
This is Emery’s first time directing at SLU, and he is appreciative for the opportunity. “I was tallying it up and it would cost me ten thousand dollars from my own pocket to pull off a show like this in my own.”
Shannon Nichole Sanazaro is directing Song by Bryan Tucker. Sanazaro found the play online and said it is a satirical comedy that addresses issues of our pop culture. It is about a businessman who joins a boy band then goes into politics.
This is Sanazaro’s first time directing as well. She said that she has worked with three different sets of faculty within the Saint Louis University Theatre department, and the result has been that she has developed her own style of directing. “It’s all me.”
Sound intriguing? Three of the plays opened last night and will repeat on Friday, and the other three will run on Thursday and Saturday. A $3 donation is suggested, plays begin at 8 p.m. each night in the Studio Theater in the lower level of Xavier Hall. Reservations can be made at (314) 977-3327
