The job hunt is about to get a little easier.
On Wednesday, Jan. 30, the Saint Louis University Career Services Department is hosting its 2002 Spring Job Expo, which will take place at the Simon Recreation Center from noon to 5 p.m.
The expo is open to all SLU students and alumni from all majors. According to Deanna Kauffman of Career Services, the event is organized as a tool to help members of the SLU community that are seeking full-and part-time job positions, as well as internships.
Recruiters from approximately 50 organizations will be at the job expo. Many of those organizations are St. Louis businesses that are looking for future employees from a wide range of academic backgrounds.
“I am very excited about the diversity of companies that are coming to this semester’s job fair,” Kauffman said. “Many companies are willing to look at all majors.”
There will be representatives from some service organizations, like Americorps and the Peace Corps. The SLU Graduate School will also be at the event.
“I am pretty uneasy about looking for a job, and I’m hoping that the job fair will be a good way for me to get started,” said senior Elise LaBarge, who is planning on attending Wednesday’s event.
Kauffman explained that for some students, especially underclassmen, the job expo can also serve as an opportunity to interact with recruiters to learn more about different companies in students’ future fields.
“This is a great educational opportunity to see what the companies do and to seek advice from employers,” she said.
According to Kauffman, students who are seeking employment should come dressed “as professionally as possible” with several copies of their resume.
She also suggested that students look over the companies that are going be at the job expo ahead of time, which are listed on the Career Services Web site (http://
careers.slu.edu), and research the ones with which they are most interested in speaking.
“Above all, students should come ready and prepared to talk about who they are and what they are looking for,” Kauffman said.
Career Services is helping to organize a social service career and practicum fair on Feb. 5, a health-care career fair on March 21 and a teacher networking event in April, but Wednesday’s event will be the last multipurpose job fair this school year.
