Break out your business suits and resumes, the Career Fair is coming to Saint Louis University next Wednesday. Sponsored by Career Services, the fair will bring more than 60 employers and a few graduate schools to the Simon Recreational Center from noon to 4:30 p.m.
According to Sara Ramos, assistant director of Career Services, the fair is a good opportunity to “learn more about companies, internship and part-time positions.”
She also said that the fair is for all SLU students, not just juniors and seniors.
Among the companies attending are A.G. Edwards, the American Red Cross, Famous Barr and Monsanto. The fair traditionally focuses on St. Louis area companies, but Ramos said, “That’s something we’ve tried to change.” Ramos said Career Services has tried to cultivate new leads with employers. “Not every SLU student will look for employment in St. Louis,” she said.
Students attending the job fair are encouraged to dress professionally, which means ties for the men and conservative dress for all. “This isn’t the time to take a big chance on wacky earrings,” Ramos said.
Also, students should bring a resume and have an objective for their visit.
Students can expect to get information about different corporations, contacts at different companies and details about different occupations.
But don’t expect to walk out with a job offer. “These are great networking opportunities,” Ramos said.
New to the fair this year are several colleges promoting their graduate schools, including Marquette and other midwestern schools.
Career Services is offering extended hours in the days leading up to the fair, so that students can come in and have a counselor review their resume.
Ramos recommended that students not wait until the last minute to actually create their resume because Career Services requires an appointment.
The Career Fair is not the only opportunity SLU students will have to meet with companies on campus. Career Services also hosts a number of on-campus recruiting events throughout the year.
An online database run by Career Services, eRecruiting, matches registered SLU students to companies coming to campus. Students must call or e-mail Career Services to register, but once in the system, companies planning to recruit on SLU’s campus can have their pick of students in the database.
In addition to the fair, Career Services offers workshops throughout the year, as well as counseling. Their offices are located in the Academic Resources Center at 3840 Lindell, next to the Bannister House.
