The Casey Ann Hohman Memorial Association will be hosting a memorial run/walk to benefit the Heart Transplant Association of St. Louis.
The event will be held Sunday, Sept. 29 at 8:30 a.m. The 5K run or 1-mile walk through Tower Grove Park will include refreshments, music and prizes. A commemorative T-shirt and entry to the run/walk will be given for a donation of $15 or more.
One hundred percent of the donations will go directly to the Heart Transplant Association, a volunteer, nonprofit group of heart transplant patients and their families.
The privately funded group relies on donations to assist their financial needs. The funds they raise go directly to pre-and post-heart transplant patients who are in need of assistance with medications, lodging and other expenses related to their transplant care.
Hohman received a heart transplant in November 2001 and passed away three months later, due to her body’s rejection of the new heart. She was a senior at Saint Louis University majoring in marketing and finance, in the John Cook School of Business.
She was a founding member of Sigma Kappa sorority, and as a member of Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity, she worked with underprivileged children.
She was also the recipient of the St. Ignatius Loyola Service scholarship, which is presented to students who are committed to community service.
“I think that the walk will be very successful,” said Maria Baran, president of Sigma Kappa. “With the amount of support that our Sigma Kappa chapter and the Hohman family received last year after Casey’s death, I can tell that this is a cause that touches a lot of lives.”
“Casey was so dedicated to service and helping others,” said Dan Schniedermeier, a friend who has been involved in the planning of the event. “Helping with this has been a form of therapy for me.”
“The entire Sigma Kappa chapter at SLU is supporting, promoting and looking forward to the big day–we’ll all be there with running shoes on and cannot wait to see hundreds of other faces from the Saint Louis University campus,” Baran said.
The event will be held at the old playground shelter at Tower Grove Park, 4256 Magnolia Avenue. Entry forms and complete details can be found at the run/walk’s Web site http://home.mchsi.com/~hohmanfoundation/runwalk.html or by contacting Jamie or Vince Hohman at (636) 447-7513.
